This weekend, My buddy Redwing77 sent me a text to tell me that Cal Clutterbuck had been traded to the New York Islanders. The text caught me off guard. At least the Wild were smart enough to not send him to a conference opponent. Mike Doyle, Minnesota Wild --- The Minnesota Wild has acquired right wing Nino Niederreiter from the New York Islanders in exchange for to the rights to Cal Clutterbuck and a third-round pick (70th overall) in today's NHL Entry Draft. Niederreiter was the fifth-overall pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. In 2012-13, the Chur, Switzerland native played in 74 games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the Islanders' American Hockey League affiliate, scoring 28 goals and adding 22 assists. The 20-year-old was second on the team in scoring. He is the highest drafted Swiss player in NHL history. He also led Switzerland with five goals, and added three assists in the 2013 IIHF Men’s World Championship, as the Swiss earned a silver medal – its first World Championship medal in 60 years. Needless to say, I am shocked that the Wild didn't try to re-sign their hit leader.

The Wild don’t have a pick, still add a prospect

The Wild are up against a wall this offseason. They need to find a little cap space, which they would do by letting go of Dany Heatley using something called a compliance buyout, but they can’t do that because he had shoulder surgery and is on the isable list. They needed to find another way to stock their roster and to get their payroll down. The team needed to make a decision...

NHL Draft prompts Wild trades as they deal Falk and Clutterbuck for Ferriero and Niederreiter

The Minnesota Wild have sort of made a tradition out of making a splash on draft day.  From the Wild making its first 'splash' by dealing a 1st round draft pick (16th Overall Trevor Lewis) and Patrick O'Sullivan to the Los Angeles Kings for Pavol Demitra, and then a few years later dealing Brent Burns for Devin Setoguchi, Charlie Coyle and the 28th Overall pick...

The New York Islanders have traded forward Nino Niederreiter to the Minnesota Wild in return for Cal Clutterbuck. Wild Dealing With The Salary Cap

from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune, The NHL’s salary cap next year is $64.3 million. The Wild is being hit with a bonus overage of roughly $400,000 for exceeding the cap last year. That means the Wild’s cap ceiling is about $63.9 million, probably less. Buffalo is picking up roughly $800,000 of Jason Pominville’s salary, but the Wild still has a $927,778 buyout...
