Ducks D Smaby injures thumb, out 2-3 months

Anaheim Ducks defenseman Matt Smaby is expected to be sidelined two-to-three months after suffering a torn ligament in his thumb. Surgery is on the immediate horizon for Smaby, who was having a solid preseason. The 26-year-old Minnesota native did not record a point but had 17 penalty minutes in 32 games last season with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
