Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Odds and ends 8/12/11

Best of luck to former Flyers forward Sami Kapanen as he attempts to come back this season as an active player for KalPa Kuopio of Finland's SM-Liiga. Bothered by back problems, Kapanen announced his retirement after the 2009-10 season to focus solely on his responsibilities as the team's majority owner. Spending a year off the ice did him a lot of good physically, but...

The Moments That Define Our 10,000 Hours: Sami Gets Off the Ice

Our man Rev is back for another guest post. You may remember him from his "Lost and the Philly Sports Scene" series. These are his words. In his book Outliers Malcolm Gladwell asserts that if you start at an early enough age it takes approximately 10,000 hours of practice or repetition to truly master a given discipline. Upon hearing this I immediately...

Flyers vs. Devils Gamethread: Nobody Beats the Devils Edition.

The only time I’ve ever seen Martin Brodeur soundly defeated by a Philadelphia Flyers hockey team was in the opening round of the 2003-04 Quarterfinals.  I was scared, terrified even as I sat in the 2nd row of the Mezzanine watching the pre-game shoot around during Game 1, and it wasn’t because I happened to be on my first date with my future wife.  It was because...

Capitals Post-Mortem

A great season came to an early end last night, as the Flyers eliminated the Capitals in overtime of Game 7. As painful as the loss was, it was made more painful by very poor officiating. I tracked down the relevant NHL rules, and show that the officials blew it.

Flyers Need to Bounce Back Against Isles, plus the latest on the Trade Front

It's not a must-win situation, but the Flyers need to take care of the last place Islanders if they want to stay in the hunt for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. They need to ignore all of the injuries and Forsberg talk and go out and get a win. *The Trade Front We know the Flyers want to add a puck moving defenseman, but with all these injuries, might they be looking...

Defending Hockey's Honor

Well mostly because I feel bad that it's on it's last legs I'm going to advocate Hockey for a bit and applaud it for its commendable attributes, for instance Legal Assault.
