The Chicago Blackhawks agreed to a four-year contract with defenseman Steve Montador on Thursday, keeping him off the free-agent market.
The Blackhawks made the move a day after acquiring Montador's negotiating rights from Buffalo for a seventh-round draft pick in 2012 or 2013. The 31-year-old Montador would have become an unrestricted free agent Friday.

Blackhawks obtain rights to D Montador
The Chicago Blackhawks acquired the rights to defenseman Steve Montador from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a seventh round pick in 2012 or 2013.
Montador, 31, had a career-best 21 goals with five goals last season while leading the Sabres with a plus-16 rating. He will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
Montador has played nine seasons with five different teams....
