Jimmy Howards broken right index finger will be either the best or worst case scenario for Red Wing backup goalie Ty Conklin. Not that Conklin or anybody else for that matter wanted to see Howard get injured, but in pro sports it comes down to opportunity.
If anybody needs an opportunity to prove themselves, its Ty Conklin.

Can the Blues’ Goaltending Get Any Better?
The answer is yes. Signing Brian Elliot to a $600,000 two-way deal was a great move as the Blues gained an all star and did not have to sacrifice any assets. It was a minor blip on the radar in the free agency period last summer but it’s panned out wonderfully to this point. What they lost in free agency though was Ty Conklin. This sounds like nothing at first.

Conklin strong, Red Wings back atop the West
To put it mildly, Ty Conklin has struggled in his efforts to back up All-Star Jimmy Howard between the pipes for the Wings. Coming into Dallas on Tuesday night he had won 2 of his previous 7 starts this season; posting a save percentage of under .900 (Jimmy Howard is around .930, for comparison).

DALLAS (AP) --Jiri Hudler scored in the second round of the shootout, Detroit's Ty Conklin was perfect in all three rounds, and the Red Wings beat the Dallas Stars 3-2 on Tuesday night.
