Phelps, finished 3rd in the 200 free in qualifying heats of the 200 Free at the Charlotte Ultra Swim. He was narrowly beaten out by Davis Tarwater and Peter Vanderkaay. Phelps finished his first race in 1:50.46. This is over 7 seconds slower than his world record of 1:42.96.

  • I think he'll turn it up for the event finals, but it would be embarrassing for Phelps not to win at the Charlotte Ultra Swim

    Informative article-comparison videos, stats, the works. Don't think these qualifying results are any cause for alarm. He'll turn it on when he needs to.

    I never worry about what he places in qualifying. Whenever he does qualifying rounds, he doesn't go out to win or to impress. He goes out to make sure he makes it to the next. No need to worry. Though I don't think he should mess with perfection. His original strokes won him all 8 gold medals these past olympics and break numerous world records.
