Once Again, Girls Punished (Instead of Rewarded) for Being Better!

Once again, proof that if a girl just so happens to be better than the boys, she gets punished. I think this is ridiculous. And just what lessons are those parents teaching their sons?! If you aren't better than the girls, just get the girls kicked off the team (or fired, when they get older)? Or that girls aren't supposed to be better than boys, or have the same opportunities? Or, worst of all, boys don't have to work harder, or get better, because SOMEONE will make sure the girls don't have the same opportunities so they don't ever have a chance to show the boys up? Good grief. For obvious reasons, this one sets me off.

I read this yesterday. It really is a sad thing when we can't overlook gender (or anything for that matter) and just be proud of someones talent and ability. I watched a video on her and toward the end one of the boys said that she challenged them to do better. It's really too bad adults have to interpose with their ideals.

Ms_Lisa, I agree. I think it just comes down to the fact that men (in this case, the fathers) can't handle getting chic'd. The thing is they need to see that it is not about a girl being 'better' than or stronger than the boys, its about elevating one's skill and game. The comment that one of the boys said that 'she challenged them to do better' is really what sports and competition is all about.

I know, ms_lisa. And we wonder where the prevailing attitude toward women - that they aren't equal (or better) - comes from? We wonder why there is such thing as a glass ceiling. Look no further.

they had a news thingy on sunday's here in philly town-it talked a about this, but they countered it with a girl who's 10 & throws a softball 53 MPH, they call her the "dominator" her name is dominigue and she is cute as a button LOL!! good blog!!!

It hit our radio waves this morning. Hey, Checked out your girl Domonique on YouTube. I don't know how to move over a vid, so here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcoW7U_OVMg. Thanks for the heads-up. She's pretty fly. I love being a girl. Girls RULE!

aw that was nice of you!! and YA girls RULE ;0 !!!!! keep doin what you do on here!!!

My pleasure! And same to you, Ck - keep doin' it!

Obviously the parents that complained were used to a certain kind of mediocrity.

Seriously, the irony is that by "babying" their sons, they ended up severely stunting their emotional (and athletic) growth.
Now were gonna have do probably deal with a bunch of insecure boys that'll probably end up as republicans when they get old enough to vote.

Jamie actually comes out on top here, because not only did she get a early primer on the b.s. that life doles out on the reg cause of insecure fools. But now shes probably on a better team that will likely better showcase her talents, and definitely appreciate her more.
Therefore making her a better person and athlete.

I just hate discrimination, ladies.
peace

My dad woulda said "suck it up."
But then again, I was raised not to be a closed minded wuss.
so there ya go.

OMG, have I heard the "suck it up" line so many times... from my dad. Do youthink girls hear it more than boys? If so, why is this?

Me three. My dad said it all the time too. I suppose he had to, since I have 5 brothers..lol!
(I have 2 sisters as well, but they were out of the house by the time I was born. I was stuck with da boys..lol)

mslisa, not only do we share a name, but similar siblings. I have 4 older brothers. And ppl think we're princesses, huh!

cool! lmao @ princess! Yeah, I have heard that quite a bit by ppl that don't have a clue. lol!!

That is so well said, V!
They were probably not challenging her enough anyway.

crashing the party ladies came in off of ck's page, not enough of us ladies on here. thank you for the superfly read i know i abuse that word lol take care, shana

It's a welcomed crash!

thank you so much, girls rule and we need to stick together

It's amazing how they let her play for years before kicking her off. She could've been a great lesson for young boys everywhere. I bet all the ladies on this page experienced something similar in their lives.

How'd you know (LOL)? Such a shame. But I guess that's part of what's makes us fighters. Btw, I found it interesting, as well, that she had played so many years beforehand with the boys.

I think that is why this is disturbing. If she hadn't played all those years w/ the boys, I don't think it would have been an issue. It was the fact that she did and then it was taken away from her just because she was doing well. Anyways, I'm glad she drew some attention to herself. She's got a bright future ahead of her.

I am late to this party but WOW! Is this 2008 or 1952?
It is unbeleiveable they are denying this girl the opportunity to play the game she loves (and is so good at). I feel really bad for her but I think she will not let this hold her down.

Women are never late! You were just making an entrance. Welcome! And... it may be 1952. Not sure from the looks of the article.

Ah crap! I forgot my bobby socks at home! lol!

How 'bout we all get together and brush each other's hair?LOL.

poodle skirt- i get to wear the poodle skirt - pink at that LMAO!

LOL!!

LMAO! I have thick hair and need a firm bristle.

U girls is cuh-razy!
I am laughing my arse off over here!

U nut MOM lol!!!!!!!

It's a shame this stuff still goes on... Women are just as capabale to be good at sports as men are..

You see, this is what happens when you get the girls together on the threads. No hating, no insults or name calling, and no negativity. Just hangin' out, havin' fun, being crazy! Again, GIRLS RULE! (And, as an aside, just from reading the other threads, we seem to have a pretty good perspective on sports, as well)! Keep it up, Ladies!

let's ask Mr. D for our own corner LMAO!!!!! hehe!!!

This one's for the LADIES! Ladies Only! WHOO HOO!

I'm lauging so hard - my mascara is running.....oh i'm such a girl !!!! this thread is a trip!!! good one Kat!!!

I know. We are officially off the chain.

well off the chain, then we need our own song-
who let the girls out

oh mannnnnn!!!!! ppl. are starting to stare at me at work !!!

It's LADIES NIGHT! Oh what a night!

At that age 10-14 girls are bigger then boys and more developed. My kid's team played the girl's team and they got their butts whooped. My kid actually got stuffed by one of the girls while trying to do a layup, and ended up on the floor, basketball still in hand.

Did anyone else notice that this girl is from Beaverton??? Yikes.

Pink, I have to admit, I laughed out loud when I read that your kid had the ball still in hand. Shame on me, but having played and coached basketball most of my life, I had the visual. Please forgive me. And you're right about girls being bigger than boys. In high school I punched one of our wrestlers in the nose. By our 5-year reunion he was looking me eye-to-eye. But it was all good.

oh no. I laughed when it happened..luckily he was on the other side of the court when it happened. Poor little guy.

another thing I noticed about girls and boys at that age (or maybe guys and girls in general!) is that girls believe in teamwork, while the boys just want to be the star and run the ball all the way. Unless the boys have great coaches, I noticed that almost all the teams my kids team played, there was one "superstar" kid, and all the others were just sidekicks. But the girls all passed to each other to make the basket. Girls don't have huge ego problems I guess....

That, girlfriend, is the effect that today's NBA has on our boys. The NBA is great at marketing its stars. But the trickle-down is that every boy wants to be THAT star versus being on a team.

When anyone excels; Boy or Girl, it should be encouraged.
I measure it on similar scenarios...
If I had a son who was a great gymnast, I would encourage it, and if I had a girl who was a basketball player, I would let her tone herself, and enjoy the game.

The sex of an individual should not interfere, let alone undermine the success an individual has on the field. I am more upset that the league was not being professional about the situation.

I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say, "We love you Pumakicks!" And you're kids are going to ROCK!

Well said!

Indeed.
