Robert Heffernan pulled away in the last 10 kilometers to win the gold medal in the 50-kilometer walk Wednesday, giving Ireland its first men's world championship title in 30 years.
Heffernan's gold came 30 years to the day after Eamonn Coughlan won the 5,000 meters in 1983. Ireland's last gold medal was 18 years ago when Sonia O'Sullivan won the 5,000.
