Command Statistics: A sortie into the unknown

Corey Kluber and Zach McAllister are, at first glance, quite similar pitchers. Each were received in a trade for role players (McAllister for Austin Kearns, Kluber for Jake Westbrook), neither of the two were widely-heralded prospects, and their 2013 ERAs were even within a tenth of a point of each other (Kluber at 3.85, McAllister at 3.75). Going into 2014, the first-glance...

Second Thoughts: The sweet life of Zach and Corey

When the Indians placed Brett Myers on the 60-day DL this week, they also effectively moved the veteran from the “reclamation” pile to the junk pile-- $7 million in dough down the drain for all intents and purposes. Barring a shocking comeback, Myers is this year’s Derek Lowe. And so, for those with a perpetual ax to grind, it’s another fine occasion to either (a) bemoan...

Indians exemplifying “next man up” thus far

Once upon a time, nagging injuries were analogous to death knell in Cleveland. When Grady Sizemore started finding his name on the disabled list more often than not, the Indians were forced to replace him with Ezequiel Carerra. When Shin–Soo Choo was shelved in 2011, right field would subsequently be occupied by the likes of Austin Kearns. Chris Giminez, Jerad Head, Travis Buck...

Second Thoughts Game #30: A's 0, Indians 1

Big Mac does it again I never get tired of bringing up the fact that we got Zach McAllister forAustin Kearns. And with each start, that joke becomes even funnier. The right-hander put together arguably his most dominant start ever in an Indians uniform pitching seven and two-thirds innings on Tuesday night in a 1-0 Tribe victory over Oakland. McAllister allowed five hits and a...

Nats Travel To Florida To Face Floundering Marlins

The Washington Nationals (7-5) recently experienced what it’s like to be swept, and they would like nothing more than to remind the Miami Marlins (2-10) of the feeling. The Nats swept the Marlins in the first series of the season, and after dropping their last three contests to the Atlanta Braves, they will hope to repeat their early level of success again in Florida. This...

Not looking good, LaMarcus! Not feeling good, Ty!

In case any of you commented on the blog or tweeted a question at me last night I’m sorry I wasn’t able to respond. You see, I was smack dab in the middle of a live National League only Fantasy Baseball auction. 5 hours! Frankly, it’s embarrassing to admit that 11 grown men were sitting in the back of a bar fighting over Austin Kearns but it is what it is. That’s what it...

Your Morning Dump...where Bard wants to start the season in the Majors.

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. “It’s pretty obvious that something needs to be made,” said Bard of a roster decision. “I think I’ve done what I’ve needed to as far as just to prove I’m over last year. Re-Morseful?

Austin Kearns AND Michael Morse are now off the table. The Fish made Kearns’ return official earlier today. Morse departed the east coast for the Pacific Northwest in a fascinating three-team deal, which transpired a few hours ago. Morse went from the Nats to his original organization, the Mariners, while Seattle sent catcher John Jaso to the Athletics, and Oakland in turn sent...

Something Smells Fishy In Miami

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Marlins are about to re-sign outfielder Austin Kearns, but that’s not the most interesting item in his column. It looks like high ranking Marlins executives including owner Jeffrey Loria have been avoiding the media since the middle of November. Besides forbidding president David Samson from doing his radio show, Marlins...

Kearns agrees to minor-league deal with Marlins

Outfielder Austin Kearns has agreed to terms on a minor-league contract with the Miami Marlins, and the deal includes an invitation to spring training, the Miami Herald reported Sunday. Kearns, 33, hit .245 with four home runs for the Marlins last season, when he struggled in the second half of the season because of leg injuries. He hit .200 with two homers for Cleveland in 2011.

Cross Kearns off the list

Looks like another right handed outfielder is off the market, Austin Kearns will re-sign with the Marlins on a minor league deal.  I thought Kearns would be a nice inexpensive fit for the Mets instead of signing Hairston for two years or trading prospects for a guy similar to Kearns.  I like the Colin Cowgill trade but if I was going that route I would have brought in a few Cowgill...

Marlins considering Capps, trying to re-sign Kearns

The Miami Marlins have made headlines this offseason for trades, in which they gutted their team. Miami is currently trying to add a few veteran players to their roster. According to the Miami Herald the Marlins and outfielder Austin Kearns are close to an agreement for the 2013 season. Kearns appeared in 87 games for the Marlins last season compiling a .245/.366/.367 line with four...

Is Jeff baker on Mets wish list...

We've all heard Austin Kearns name as a fall back if the Mets fail in their attempts to re-sign Scott Hairston. Kearns seems like a natural fit and I've even come to the conclusion that if hairston is going to cost two years while Kearns can be brought in on a minor league deal, then I'm going with Kearns.  In my opinion the upgrade to Hairston is marginal in comparison...
