Mississippi State linebacker Benardrick McKinney was one of the Southeastern Conference's most productive freshmen last season, providing a ferocious presence in the middle of the Bulldogs' defense.
His trick to such early-career production: He didn't have to think much. Veteran Cameron Lawrence did a lot of that for him.
But now Lawrence is gone - off to pursue a career...
“It feels more like bowl prep than spring ball,” Dan Mullen commented. The coach certainly had a point, with the (alleged) 50 degrees and light drizzle his Bulldogs had just finished practicing in. Not that anyone complained. “It was kind of fun,” said Benardrick McKinney. “We stayed juiced-up out there.”
His ambitions were pretty much entry-level at the time. Funny, though, how serious success can expand a Bulldog’s horizons. “All I wanted as a kid was to play for a big college,” Benardrick McKinney said. “Then my goals changed the minute I got here.”
