Your Morning Dump… Where Wilt loses to Russell again, and it’s his own fault

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big story line. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Wilt’s infamous failure to win as frequently as Russell has a solid excuse: his supporting casts were almost never as good as the ones Russell had in Boston. When they were good — like in 1967 in Philadelphia...

The Smartest NBA Players Of All Time Have Not Performed Well On TV

No one more intuitively understood the movements of basketball players within the live flow of the game more than Earvin “Magic” Johnson. No more more completely grasped everything it takes to win a championship than Bill Russell. No player married longevity with quality better than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Producing substantially as a core member of a repeat NBA champion at 41?...

Our “Best of the NBA Summer Tour” at Crossover Chronicles takes a brief detour from dueling top-5 lists. We narrow today’s discussion to A or B: Which NBA dynasty was — and is — better: The 1990s Chicago Bulls of Michael Jordan and Phil Jackson, or the 1960s Boston Celtics of Bill Russell and Red Auerbach? Both dynasties were going to be mentioned in this piece, regardless...

Position-less basketball and the New York Knicks

Carmelo Anthony The 2015 NBA Finals validated the characterization of the NBA as a “guard-driven” league. Gone are the days of Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlin, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Patrick Ewing, and Shaquille O’Neal who, while great, were largely unable to find consistent success outside of the paint. Today’s NBA values players who can produce from almost anywhere on the...

Andre Iguodala Wins NBA Finals MVP After His Selfless, Transformative Season in Golden State

As Bill Russell congratulated Andre Iguodala on winning perhaps the most improbable NBA Finals MVP award in more than 30 years, I recalled Iguodala’s lone season in Denver two years ago, when he was eliminated prematurely by the younger version of a team that, two years later, would transform his career. The youngest iteration of the current Golden State Warriors ended the George...

Is Anthony Davis the next Bill Russell?

Comparing any young big man to Bill Russell is a mistake. Celtics legend Bob Cousy: Hassan Whiteside first player to remind me of Bill Russell

NBA Hall of Famer and Celtics legend Bob Cousy played with the indomitable Bill Russell for seven seasons in Boston. The two won six rings together. When discussions about the greatest player in NBA history arise, Cousy naturally sides with Russell. No big man in the league since has even held a passing resemblance to Russell's dominance on the glass and on defense. No one, that...
