All-Aught Indians--Closer--Bob Wickman (2000-2006)

Whenever I think of former closer Bob Wickman, three things immediately pop into my head: 1.  He severed his index finger down to his first knuckle when he was two in a farming accident. 2.  He has the most saves in Cleveland Indians history. 3.  I had to purchase a defibrillator to help jump start my heart after nearly every one of his outings. During the best of days, Bob Wickman...

It could be argued that Mike Gonzalez was the best closer in 2006. So why no love?

Wickman to DL; Who Will Close?

With the recent struggles of aging Braves closer Bob Wickman, the question has been asked numerous times this week: if Wickman were to get the yank, who would close between Rafael Soriano or Mike Gonzalez? Now that Wickman's hitting the DL, the question got decidedly more interesting. Find the answer at SeamlessBaseball.com

Appreciation for Bob Wickman - Indians Comment of the Day

"Don't confuse Bob Wickman with Joe Borowski. Wickman worked very hard to come back from injury for the Tribe and was an All-Star reliever with us - even getting some MVP consideration (not much, but some) in 2005. In his final full-year with the Tribe, he had a 2.47 ERA and led the AL with 45 saves. He gave up four runs in his first appearance that year, and only 13 more the rest...

Yankees almost traded Mariano Rivera in 1996

That's according to Peter Abraham. During the spring of 1996, when the Yankees weren't sure if young shortstop Derek Jeter was ready for the full-time gig, the team wanted to acquire Felix Fermin from the Seattle Mariners. They had no use for him now that Alex Rodriguez was ready for the big ...

Cubs Claim Catcher Off Waivers

The Cubs have claimed 26-year old C-1B Max Ramirez off waivers from the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox claimed Ramirez off waivers from the Texas Rangers last Wednesday, and immediately placed him back on waivers again the next day, obviously hoping they were the only club with interest in Ramirez and that they could sneak him through. But what the BoSox did not foresee was that...

Welcome to Cleveland Kerry Wood

I was excited when the Indians signed Kerry Wood to take over the role of closer.  After attending Sunday’s game against the Jays, I am even more excited.  Standing up, cheering and going crazy with two strikes when Bob Wickman or Joe Borowski is on the mound is pure courtesy.  Standing up and going crazy [...]

Fernando Rodney is the New Closer of the Angels

Deep breath. We remember owning Bob Wickman. We remember Shawn Chacon's ERA being over 7. And we most recently recall owning a certain Mike MacDougal. Rodney is coming off of a season in which his ERA was 4.40 and his WHIP was 1.47. His strikeout rate is below average among closers, but in the grand scheme of things he finished with 8 less strikeouts than Joakim Soria last season...

Atlanta Braves 2007 payroll about $80M

There are some bargains here. Chuck James and Brian McCann are set to make $327,000 and $333,000, respectively, but then there are Mike Hampton and Bob Wickman. Those two will combine for over 20% of the team's $80 million salary. OUCH! The braves are an interesting team. Plenty of young talent to compete, but not enough healthy/productive vets to carry them through the...

Memorabilia Monday: Wade Boggs and Assorted Yankees

Who else but Gibbys_Limp? My youngest sister had gone to a NY Yankees game on August 30, 1995 and came home with the commemorative pin given out that day, the ticket stub, and a signed visor. She gave all 3 items to me, knowing I'm not a fan of the Yankees at all, but a baseball fan, and always looking to add to my memorabilia collection. The visor is signed by Mike Stanley...

Spitballing: Never Tell Me the Odds by Jeremy Greenhouse

Had there been an unlikely comeback on yesterday’s slate of games, it would have served as the subject of my lead-in. Since no teams were kind enough to supply one, let’s forgo a lead-in and dive right into the wacky world of win expectancy. Salvage Me..Oh Aaron Laffey

That one was straight outta the Joe Borowski/Bob Wickman school of saving ballgames wasn't it?But it didn't really feel like oh my god here we go.It was sort of like.. Okay whatever he'll just strike out the side or something. He didn't do that, but Kerry Wood got the double play ball and then struck out Harris to end the game. But thank the world for Aaron Laffey.Where would we be...
