Aging Veteran Times Two, Dodgers Sign Matt Treanor

Well that didn't take long, Ken Rosenthal says the Dodgers have come to an agreement with free agent catcher Matt Treanor. I don't really see the point, but perhaps Colletti and Mattingly are looking for a Brad Ausmus type of role for Treanor. With maybe the hope of him developing A.J. Ellis and the young but very talented Tim Federowicz. I don't really see the need for...

David Arrigo Is Greatest Goalie Mask Artist You’ve Never Heard Of

Although he has no formal art training, David Arrigo just might be the greatest goalie mask artist we’ve ever seen. Arrigo has done masks for the known and the unknown. In the known category, he’s painted masks for the Pittsburgh Penguins Brent Johnson, the Montreal Canadiens Carey Price, former Red Wings keeper Mike Vernon, and the Phoenix Coyotes Jason LaBarera. The...

Why Can't Most Catchers Hit?

Why are so many catchers in baseball so useless with the bat? A staggering 314 catching seasons of 100 plate appearances or more have occurred in the last ten years with a catcher having an OPS+ of 80 or less. That's an average of one per team for every season in the last ten years (30 teams times ten seasons). For comparison, 174 such seasons have occurred for shortstops, a...

Hunter Pence is something special

Several years ago when the career of Craig Biggio was nearing an end and both Brad Ausmus and Jeff Bagwell had departed the question was posed to Craig about who he thought would take over as the face and leader of the team. Certainly most figured he would point to Lance Berkman who was at the peak of his skills and was a very popular figure with the media and fans. But Biggio passed...

Russell Martin Finds a Team Worthy of His Intensity

"Oh Jorge, Brad Ausmus' veteran touch was never this tender." Oh yeah, we're bitter. From "Martin's two homers propel Yankees" at Yankees.com: Martin signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Yankees after dabbling with the idea of catching for the Red Sox, but concerns about durability hovered over Boston's offer. New York needed Martin to...

Robby Thompson's Record-Setting Game

While playing around with Baseball-Reference's Play Index tool, I stumbled upon something quite interesting. I was looking at games in which players had three or more caught-stealings. That's the kind of thing that interests me -- for whatever reason. Random, obscure feats like this. It makes you wonder, "Why would they keep attempting steals?!" Anyway, here'...

Goodbye Garret Anderson; Goodbye, "GAARP"

Didn't want to end this week without some words on Garret Anderson, who retired from baseball on Tuesday. Anderson was with the Dodgers for much of 2010, and in typical Joe Torre style favoring veterans, appeared in 80 games for the Dodgers, which was at least 70 games too many. Oh, what a horrible year. Anderson's batting average sunk beneath the Mendoza line on April...
