Last week, Rangers Director of Player Personnel Gordie Clark was on Sirius XM radio to talk about some of the Rangers’ blue chip prospects with Shane Malloy and Russ Cohen. has the audio here in its 30 minute entirety and I’ll highlight some key points below. Quick prospect note: Skjei week-to-week

Just a quick note: 2012 1st round pick Brady Skjei, currently on the top defense pairing at Minnesota, is week-to-week following a lower body injury. Skjei had put up 1-2-3 in 6 games with the top-ranked Golden Gophers prior to the injury. Skeji is likely to turn pro following this season with Minnesota. Conor Allen showing John Moore’s spot is not guaranteed

When the Rangers blue line finally gets healthy, the assumption has always been that John Moore will be the LD on the third pairing. It’s tough to argue with that, as the one prospect who appears NHL ready is currently playing at the University of Minnesota (Brady Skjei). Conor Allen, in preseason, was seemingly beat […] The post Conor Allen showing John Moore’s spot is not...

Gophers grind out overtime win vs. Huskies

MINNEAPOLIS -- It had to be Justin Kloos. As Minnesota and St. Cloud State skated to a tie after three periods, someone needed to step up for the Gophers to salvage a split. Kloos had already scored twice in regulation. Why not once more in overtime? Sure enough, the Gophers sophomore found the back of the net for a third time Saturday at Mariucci Arena as he completed the hat trick...

Gophers rekindle old rivalry with series against St. Cloud State

MINNEAPOLIS -- Two years ago, the 70-mile drive from Mariucci Arena to the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud was a routine trip for the Gophers. The University of Minnesota and St. Cloud State were used to battling each other twice a year. Now that Minnesota has moved to the Big Ten Conference, trips like the one this weekend are a bit scarcer. The Gophers are no longer in the...

Top-ranked Gophers say they're 'too easy to play against'

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Gophers men's hockey team is off to a 4-0 start to the year and is ranked No. 1 in both major college hockey polls. Even as that's taken place, though, Minnesota believes it can be better. Expectations are always high for the Gophers program, both from fans and players alike. Though Minnesota has skated to a perfect record through two weekends, the Gophers feel...

PROSPECT UPDATE: Steve Fogarty Is The Best NYR Prospect You Know Nothing About

In 2011 the Rangers used a third-round pick acquired from the St. Louis Blues and selected Steve Fogarty, a higher schooler from Minnesota. Fogarty was an incredibly raw prospect that Gordie Clark acknowledged from the beginning was a project and faced a long development path. Fogarty has spent the last two seasons at Notre Dame going through “hockey puberty,” if you will. It’s...

Gophers hockey shows grit, rallies past Bemidji State

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Gophers men's hockey team knew it would trail at some point this season. Through Minnesota's first three games, though, that scenario hadn't yet happened. So when the Gophers fell behind early against Bemidji State on Saturday, Minnesota finally had to rally from behind. The Gophers did so not once but twice as they won 5-3 against the Beavers to sweep the two...

Boyd leads top-ranked Gophers past Bemidji State

MINNEAPOLIS -- Power play. Shorthanded. It didn't matter for Travis Boyd. The Gophers senior scored a goal of each variety Friday for his first two tallies of the young season as he helped pace Minnesota to a 5-2 win over Bemidji State. It was the first multi-goal game for Boyd and it came in his 119th career game. Better late than never. "There's a first time for everything, so...

Top-ranked Gophers men's hockey squad motivated entering new campaign

MINNEAPOLIS -- It took Don Lucia more than four months before he could finally bring himself to watch it. Lucia's Gophers men's hockey team lost, 7-4, to Union in the national championship on April 12, a bitter ending to an otherwise promising season for a Minnesota squad that was ranked No. 1 in the nation for most of the season. It wasn't until early September that Lucia finally...

HF: Skjei tops Rangers prospects

Leslie Treff at Hockey’s Future has updated her prospect rankings, and Brady Skjei has taken over the top of the list. That is different from Corey Pronman’s rankings, that had Pavel Buchnevich as the top prospect in the system (Skjei was ranked #4). Treff noted that Skjei has found some offensive upside in his game, […] The post HF: Skjei tops Rangers prospects appeared first...

What The Rangers Kids Can Bring-Part 2

With the New York Rangers in a bind with cap space currently, chances are they will take a chance bringing up some younger players to fill in roles when needed. They need younger players to step up, more on offense currently, however, there are still plenty of defensive prospects who could see some time over the course of the season. Here is a breakdown of what you might see out...

Quick notes: Skjei returning to NCAA; No “real” offer made to Stralman

Some quick notes (before I head off to Aruba…yea, be jealous) about the prospects, free agency, and those who left the Rangers. Skjei is a first pairing defenseman with the club, and […] The post Quick notes: Skjei returning to NCAA; No “real” offer...

With Marc Staal in the final year of his contract and his future with the Rangers in doubt, Blueshirts management has been hoping that 2012 1st round pick Brady Skjei would leave the University of Minnesota early this summer to begin his pro career in the AHL. Prospect Camp Days 2 & 3 Highlights

Obviously, with the free agency insanity I’ve been remiss in updating the goings-on at the Rangers prospect development camp the last two days. So here’s a little compilation. Day 2 & 3 scrimmage & shootout highlights… One guy who I feel gets over-looked by Rangers fans (myself included) when discussing possible prospects legitimately vying for a roster spot in training...

Prospect Camp Day 1 Highlights

Before I get to the insanity that is Day 1 of free agency, I figured I’d start the day with some video, interviews and recaps from Day 1 of the Rangers prospect camp. Obviously the highlight of the day was the scrimmage… …really not much to take out of a 1:30 highlight package, except that this year’s second round pick Brandon Halverson didn’t exactly look like Brodeur...

Prospect Update: Skjei Scores Three (With Video) ; Duclair MVP Finalist

Defensively efficient prospects unfairly take the backseat to the skilled offensive guys. A three-point game and a nice move in the shootout makes for a good highlight video whereas a couple good pokechecks and neutral zone interceptions do not. It’s easy to look at a statsheet and see that a player had two goals, and therefore surely did something right. But there’s little in...

Michigan solidly defeats Gophers men's hockey

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In a game that meant little in the grand scheme of things, the top-ranked University of Minnesota men's hockey squad suffered a one-sided, 6-2 loss at No. 13 Michigan on Saturday night. One night after clinching the Big Ten conference's regular-season title, Minnesota found itself in a huge early hole. Host Michigan blitzed the visitors to the tune of four unanswered...

Gophers eyeing initial Big Ten regular-season title

MINNEAPOLIS -- High above the ice at Mariucci Arena hang many maroon and gold banners with different years printed on to indicate various achievements in Minnesota's hockey history. Fourteen of them indicate WCHA regular-season championships. As the Gophers prepare to face Michigan this weekend, they're hoping to add a banner of a different sort to the rafters: Big Ten champs.
