Cincinnati Bengals: 2013 Week 11 NFL Power Rankings (#10)

Last week: 10 (+0) Record: 6-4 The Bengals aren’t the same team on the road, losing in Chicago, Cleveland, Miami, and Baltimore and almost losing in Detroit and Buffalo. However, they are a dominant home team that is undefeated at home this season in 4 games and 4 of their final 6 games are winnable home games (Baltimore, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Minnesota). Because of that, they...

Injury-forced shuffling nothing new for Zimmer

In his six seasons as the Bengals’ defensive coordinator, Mike Zimmer has seen his unit go through some significant runs of injuries. None of those, though, have resembled what has happened the past couple of weeks. Cornerback Leon Hall and defensive tackle Geno Atkins have been lost for the season while Rey Maualuga is likely out until after the bye week, so Zimmer knows he has...

Injuries Plague Cincinnati Bengals

It wasn’t a very Happy Halloween Thursday night as the Cincinnati Bengals lost one of the best pass rushers in the NFL and the teams best defensive lineman in Geno Atkins due to injury. Late in the second quarter with 4:45 minutes to go, Atkins was underneath one of his teammates and a Dolphins ball carrier who was being tackled when his leg appeared to be caught up in the...

A Trade Would Be Nice

Reports surfaced this week that the Kansas City Chiefs have negotiated a trade to acquire Alex Smith, sending the #34 pick and a conditional pick in 2014 to the San Francisco 49ers. With five picks between #31 and #93, the rich get richer. It got me thinking about how nice it would be if the Bengals could swing a trade and acquire an extra pick. Trade who, though? The Bengals have...

Cincinnati Bengals have $16.3 million available under the salary cap

A couple of weeks ago Pro Football Talk released updated salary cap numbers, with the Bengals resting comfortably at $16.58 million under the salary cap. On Sunday Brian McIntyre with NFL.com, who uses a source with access to salary cap data, that number has further shrunk to $16,309,693. Considering that the Cincinnati Bengals haven't made a transaction since the team released...

The Zimmer Era

Mike Zimmer, easily one of our favorite coaches, is bringing his badass style to the sideline for his fifth season as the Bengals’ Defensive Coordinator. He has overseen a transformation of his unit from a group that routinely ranked in the bottom third of the league into legitimate top-10 contenders. The progress is easily visible in their league rankings. Below each ranking,...

Bengals’ Devon Still lining up at multiple positions in practice

The Bengals drafted Devon Still in the 2nd round of the 2012 NFL Draft not so much because he filled a need, but because he was a value pick. Especially after the Bengals used another draft pick, their 3rd rounder, on a defensive tackle in Brandon Thompson, it was unclear how the Bengals planned to use their defensive lineman this year. Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer loves rotation...

Who Makes The Cut? DL Edition

I may be in the minority, but I am more excited about the defensive line than any other position on the team. These nine guys will be the heart of the team, causing confusion for QBs and headaches for OCs. Even though they were already a good unit in spite of a couple of free agent losses, the Bengals still made themselves even better in the offseason. Safeties Starter On...

Who Makes The Cut? TE Edition

There were two moves in the draft that very few of us saw coming: the selection of Brandon Thompson in round 3 and the selection of Orson Charles two picks later in round 4. Neither was a pick based on need, but both were great value picks who deepen strengths of the team. I like the selection of Charles. The scouting report on him is really good, and his presence automatically creates...

AFC North draft grades

Cleveland Browns: C I've said multiple times throughout this week that I just don't like the Browns first two picks, but if you missed it, I'll restate my argument. Trent Richardson is solid, but he wasn't worth a top 5 pick, and taking a quarterback is not what the Browns needed. They need someone to come in and help Colt McCoy succeed, not somebody to come in and...

Who Is Your Favorite Draft Pick?

Marvin and the PBS war room did the nearly impossible: they have elicited praise from the national sports media for their draft. High praise. And they deserve it. From everything we can know at this point, they did an outstanding job, matching need with value with pick after pick. With all of these great picks to choose from, which one are you most excited about seeing play at PBS...

2012 AFC North Divisional Draft Grades: Rounds 1-4

The first four rounds took place over a four day period starting Thursday April 26th, and ending Saturday the 28th. Many picks were made over that time period leaving the four teams stacked with the future. The Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, Baltimore Ravens, and Pittsburgh Steelers all assessed their needs and targeted their players from that point on. Let's take a look...

This Roster Is Stacked: Defensive Line

Geoff Hobson recently began an article summarizing the draft with a poignant little story. Even before the Bengals started picking in the second round on Friday night, retiring Bengals director of football operations Jim Lippincott looked at the board and said to no one in particular, “Good luck cutting this team.” As much as it can pain me to agree with Jim Lippincott, he is...

2012 NFL Draft Grades: AFC North

As is the case every year, now that the 2012 NFL Draft is finally in the books it’s time to grade each team’s draft class. Admittedly, it’s premature to label a group as an A+ or F before they’ve even took part in a mini camp. But it’s not an entirely futile exercise. It’s nice to get a general idea of how each team did, and to get begin to develop what the expectations...
