Nolan Arenado has gone from intriguing prospect to a legtimate competitor for a big league roster spot in spring training. Such is the case when a 20-year-old dominates the fall league after driving in 122 RBIs for Class-A Modesto. Still, jumping from Class-A to the big leagues is a quantum...

Discussion: Potential minor league free agents of note

I’m going to focus on the external options here, as we’ve already reviewed the Phillies minor league free agents. You can check all minor league free agents using BA’s tracker here. I just picked out a few guys I find interesting. None of these guys are likely to be big time MLB contributors in 2012 or any time, for that matter, but they might be good depth guys...

Pittsburgh Pirates 2011 Position Recap: Shortstop

Cedeno put up strong defense in 2011. The Pittsburgh Pirates came in to the 2011 season looking for a long term option to emerge at the shortstop position.  They had signed Ronny Cedeno to a one year, $1.85 M deal, replacing his final year of arbitration.  The deal also included an option for $3 M in 2012.  Despite the option, the expectation at the start of the year was that...

Pirates Who Are Out of Options in 2012

The option status of players on the 40-man roster is always an important situation to follow.  Remaining options play a big role in who gets roster spots.  A guy who is out of options is usually going to win a roster spot over a guy with options if the two players are close.  They can determine what kind of development plan a player can expect to see.  For example, Chris Leroux...

Game 133: Astros 7 Pirates 4

This is the time of year when one ugly Pirate loss begins to bleed into the next. The Pirates had one good inning against [Wandy Rodriguez] who was otherwise excellent, striking out [13 ... holy crap, thirteen, really?] in [seven] innings of work. That lead was good for a [3-0] lead early on, but it slowly wore away until some questionable defense by [Brandon Wood and Ryan Doumit...

An Early Look At 2012

After a very exciting first half of the 2011 season, the Pirates have fallen back under .500 with little hope of getting back to it, and are headed towards their 19th straight losing season. The good news is that the Pirates will be back to 0 wins and 0 losses at the start of the 2012 season, and there should be some pretty high expectations for that club. Let's take a look at...

McKenry gets first taste of third base in bigs

On Monday, manager Clint Hurdle had already used one third baseman, Brandon Wood, when his replacement, Steve Pearce, left with a broken right index finger. Josh Harrison, the Pirates' other option at third, had started the game at second and had already been replaced. So Hurdle turned to catcher Michael McKenry.

Super Saturday afternoon

In front of a not-so-national TV audience (and some dreadful announcers, from what I’m being told), the Bucs battled to a solid victory in what had to be PNC Park’s first ever mid-afternoon Pirates game. Charlie Morton still owns the Reds. He actually did allow two runs (in the first and sixth innings), but he still did a very solid job and left the game with the lead...

Walker, Morton help Pirates beat Reds (AP)

Neil Walker had two RBI singles, the second driving in Andrew McCutchen with the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-3 Saturday. Walker's hit off of Aroldis Chapman (2-1) was his third hit of the game, and Brandon Wood followed with an RBI double, allowing Pittsburgh to improve to 8-3 against the Reds this season.
