The Amazing Brendan Donnelly
“Brendan Donnelly is hanging up his goggles,” to borrow Tim Dierkes’ memorable phrase. The old man of Anaheim had an amazing career, pitching 10 seasons in the minors before ever getting a shot at the majors, debuting on the World Champion 2002 Angels, and pitching a total of nine seasons in The Show, including an All-Star appearance in 2003.

Brendan Donnelly Retires
And a sad day it is, too, as Brendan Donnelly hangs 'em up. He had a 5.58 ERA with Pittsburgh last year.
Donnelly picked up two World Series rings, one with then-Anaheim and a second with Boston in 2007, a World Series win in 2002 Game 6 (the best World Series game played this century, IMO). A great reliever.

Independent League proves a viable resource for the Toronto Blue Jays
The Toronto Blue Jays front office doesn’t limit themselves to the usual resources to find talent; MLB, MiLB, NCAA, or the draft. This time their experts directed them to the new North American Baseball League.
Right-hander Steven Raburn has signed a minor-league contract and is expected to report to extended spring training by April 5.
In the big scheme of things, this...

Is it possible to determine an ultimate Independent champion?
The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) has gotten a lot of heat over the years, primarily because an outright champion cannot be determined. For example a 12-1 team is declared National Champion when a less hyped, smaller 13-0 school gets left out in the cold.
Many of you who follow The GM’s Perspective are familiar with my writings about the Independent leagues. While my...

Pittsburgh Pirates 2010 Review: It Started Bad
The Pittsburgh Pirates 2010 season started off with a pretty cool commercial during the Super Bowl
But in the end, the Pirates 2010 season sucked. And thanks to Frank Coonelly we were able to see the Bucs suck more than ever before! In fact it was 150 times in all of their High Definition glory on FSN.
You know what? The revenue from the TV deal was one of the biggest...

Abandoned Free Agent Signings
Eight players signed as free agents for over a million bucks in the offseason have been dumped so far this year. Let's look at the grisly details.
Alex Cora, released by Mets on 8-7-10. Signed to a one-year, $2MM deal by Omar Minaya on 11-30-09. Received 187 plate appearances.
Chan Ho Park, designated for assignment by Yankees on 7-31-10. Signed to a one...

The 2011 Bullpen
Joel Hanrahan
The trade deadline brought some good returns to the Pittsburgh Pirates, upgrading their catching situation with Chris Snyder, and adding James McDonald and Andrew Lambo from the Los Angeles Dodgers for Octavio Dotel. In the wake of the deadline, one issue is apparent, and that’s the bullpen. The Pirates have traded away Octavio Dotel, Javier Lopez, and D.J...

Nationals trade Matt Capps for a prospect
If last night was a glorious victory for Neal Huntington's bullpen building plan, today's news that Matt Capps was traded to the Twins for Wilson Ramos is pretty much the opposite of that. Capps, you will of course recall, was unceremoniously dumped by the Pirates with a non-tender back in March to allow them the freedom to go out and add Octavio Dotel, DJ Carrasco, and Brendan...

Pirates Release Donnelly
Jenifer Langosch reports that the Pittsburgh Pirates have released right hander Brendan Donnelly. The 38 year old is 3-1 with a 5.58 ERA in 30.2 innings pitched this year.
If the Mets fail to trade for a relief pitcher I could see then making a play for him. I could also see the Boston Red Sox getting involved.

With the trade deadline fast approaching it is clearly time for another list of Pirate quick hitters. Some of these may contain actual news content but the vast majority are ham-fisted analysis, outright hearsay and 75% libelous material. Read on at your own peril, really.

Donnelly departure not a surprise
Brendan Donnelly - ZumaPress
”I’ve been released a few times in my career. Usually, you have a hunch. This one I didn’t see coming at all… They’re moving forward and that’s fine. I don’t know what their definition of ‘moving forward’ is, but we’ll see…Apparently, my job here was done” – Brendan Donnelly

Pirates Quietly Swept by Padres
It doesn't happen often. In fact, it hasn't happened since 1998. But the 12-year drought is over, as San Diego finished off a three-game sweep in Pittsburgh for the first time in over a decade.Irrelevant stats aside, the big story coming out of the weekend was the demotion of pitcher Brad Lincoln, who surrendered six runs on Sunday and raised his ERA to 6.57 in the Bucs' 6-3 loss...

And here's to you, Brendan Donnelly.
One of my all time favorite relievers, Brendan Donnelly, has been DFA'd by the Pirates. And now I won't get to see him when I go to Pittsburgh. I am taking this much harder than I should. Like TT after she found out she didn't win the lottery. At least I have... Neil Walker? No, at least I have Garrett Jones. I feel better already!BRENDAN DONNELLY!!!! NOOOOOO!

Sunday Bloody Sunday, Pirates Twists Keep Coming
Could RHP Daniel McCutchen be returning to the Pirates?
In a season with more twists than a cat on a hot tin shack, the Pitsburgh Pirates sent Brad Lincoln back to AAA after the Pirates were swept by the Padres. Game 98: Padres 6 Pirates 3 (and Brad Lincoln's demotion)
The whole of this game is overwhelmed by the post-game news that Brendan Donnelly is being released and Brad Lincoln is being demoted back down to Triple-A. It's true that Lincoln's struggled quite a bit since being called up, but it wasn't hard to see that that was a possibility. This is what I wrote before his first start:
He's most likely headed towards a career as a #3 starter...
