The Blackhawks Way
The Colorado Avalanche will take on the Chicago Blackhawks again tonight, this time on the road. Chicago continues to be a force in the Western Conference. However, after their Stanley Cup Championship two years ago, the team had to lose a number of key contributors including: Dustin Byfuglien, Brent Sopel, Ben Eager, Andrew Ladd, Kris Versteeg and goalie Antti Niemi.
This was due...

Season Preview: Steve Montador
It's funny. At the beginning of 2009, and the season before, Brent Sopel manned the third pairing with a paycheck north of $2 million. And most everyone thought it was one of Dale Tallon's biggest boondoggles. But then throw in one competent season, a warm personality, and then a following season seeing what a non-dependable third pairing looks like, Hawks fans longed for...

Sopel Off to Russia
With things slowing down, it's a good time to see what a popular, former Hawk is up to. Brent Sopel signed with the KHL's (Russian League) Mettalurg Novokuznetsk last week (and that's the last time I'll be typing that team name, for fear of brain bubble). We all make jokes about sending someone off to Siberia, but Sopes is literally doing it. That's where the team is based, and...

Quiet days
These are the quietest days of the year for hockey, and the Montreal Canadiens are no exception. I got nothing. Nada.
Except the news today, via Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette, that neither Brent Sopel or James Wisniewski received a phone call from the Habs after the season. Not even a thank you.
Sopel, as you have probably read, recently signed in Russia. Wisniewski is ready...

The KHL: Legitimate Competition to the NHL?
The KHL keeps signing NHL players and not just Russian players that fail to make the grade in North America. Over the past week – and indeed over this offseason – we have seen plenty of players make the switch to the KHL. The latest players to make the move were former cup winning defenseman Brent Sopel and Russian Ex-Ranger Alexei Kovalev. While it is clear that these two players...

Will the Newcomers Help the Kill?
While the Hawks staff and coaches want to trumpet the "unpleasant factor" that their new signings bring to the table, they'd be better off focusing on actual, tangible hockey facets. Adding toughness and physicality can not to be discounted, but there are other things that the Hawks weren't good at last year that they must improve upon in this upcoming season. First and foremost...

The Veteran Defenseman Options
Following the excitement of the Brad Richards signing, Glen Sather made a relatively interesting statement that the Rangers were not finished, and that they were going to look for a veteran defenseman. With the signings of Richards, Mike Rupp, and Ruslan Fedotenko, the Rangers are now a bit stocked at the forward position, so while there are some free agent options that are intriguing...

Players Looking For A Match
from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, Former Leafs D Tomas Kaberle is going to hit the market. He wants a long-term deal in the $4.5-million per-season range and the Bruins aren’t willing to do that. He contributed to a Stanley Cup, but didn’t have a major impact. That doesn’t mean the door is closed on his return to the Bruins. Boston might be willing to do a short-term deal...

Potential bargain free agents
Every summer teams go bargain hunting, especially those up against the cap. Here are some players that general managers may be able to sign for cheap, much less than their actual value.- Brendan MorrisonJust days prior to the 2010-11, Morrison signed a one-year, $725,000 contract with the Flames. It ended up being a nice bargain pickup by then-GM Darryl Sutter as Morrison saw a...

Blackhawks Shopping List: Brent Sopel
Bringing the former Hawk home would be a nice story. Brent Sopel's family is still here, and no one loved playing in Chicago more than Sopes. And after his acceptance of an invitation to be in the Gay Pride Parade, we Hawks fans love him too, or are at least appreciative of him doing what hadn't been done before. But does bringing Sopel back make that much sense?Sopel split last...

Could Brent Sopel Return to the Blackhawks?
Flickr Photo via BridgetDS
It’s hard to believe that given the caliber of talent that the Blackhawks unloaded last summer, one of the more missed players from the Stanley Cup-winning team of the 2009-10 season was Brent Sopel.
Sopel was sent to the Atlanta Thrashers last summer, along with Dustin Byfuglien and Ben Eager, as well as Andrew Ladd, eventually.

The two goal debacle: an in-depth analysis
While I unfortunately can’t grow a playoff beard (the closest I’ll get to that is buying fake facial hair or drawing on my face with a marker) or even cheer for my own team, the one thing I can do is watch the playoffs. I will openly admit that I love the playoffs, regardless of whether the Thrashers are playing or not (and, let’s face it, the answer is typically not). Cruel...

Thursday’s Three Stars: Ryder knots Habs; Blackhawks blowout
No. 1 Star: Michael Ryder, Boston Bruins
His first goal in Game 4 against the Montreal Canadiens was critical: Matching the first goal of the game by Brent Sopel, just over 2 minutes into the second period. His second goal was the most important of the game and the series for Boston: Converting a Chris Kelly pass into the game-winning goal 1:59 into overtime, as the former Canadien...

Michael Ryder, Bruins Prove Their Resiliency With Rally for Overtime Win in Game 4 in Montreal
MONTREAL -- Through the first three games of the series, falling behind early was a harbinger of doom. The Bruins couldn't overcome Montreal's fast starts in the first two games in Boston and the Canadiens' rally in Game 3 came up short after the Bruins jumped out to the early advantage. So when Montreal struck first on a Brent Sopel goal at 8:13 of the opening period, things looked...

Michael Ryder pushes the Bruins over the Habs in overtime, series tied
A few minutes into the game the Canadiens began to swarm the Bruins zone, using their speed to their advantage and even bringing a bit of physicality to their game along the boards. David Desharnais set up behind the net and backhanded a pass out front. The pass trickled through traffic but wound up on Brent Sopel's stick at the point. The shot was hammered low blocker side and...

Habs Willing to Take Their Shots
From the Canadian Press via Metro:
Brent Sopel says it helps to be a little crazy for a player other than a goaltender to block shots in an NHL game.
And the lunacy becomes epidemic in the playoffs, when just about every skater is ready to stand in front of cannon-like blasts from the point to keep the opposing team from scoring.
“Yeah, it hurts,” Sopel, the Montreal Canadiens’...
