Rays Retain Howell
J.P. Howell may have been relatively forgotten around the league after sitting out the 2010 season due to labrum surgery. The Rays, however, haven’t forgotten Howell’s recent contributions to their organization. The lefty threw nearly 90 innings for the AL East champion 2008 team while posting a 2.22 ERA and 3.39 FIP, becoming an elite relief ace for a team making the...

Reliever Brian Shouse Retires
Longtime relief pitcher Brian Shouse is retiring after 21 seasons in professional baseball, writes Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.
“It has been a long and fun career,” the 42-year-old said. “It lasted much longer than I anticipated.”
By age 33, Shouse had just 13 major league games to his credit. After spending some time with Kansas City in 2002, the reliever hooked...

Where Have All The Rays Lefty Relievers Gone?
Chris from Watching Durham Bulls Baseball brought to our attention a glaring weakness in the Rays organizational depth. Not only is there only one active lefty in the Rays bullpen. There are very few lefty options in the minor leagues right now…

AAA – (RJ Swindle on DL)
AA – Darin Downs

Red Sox add Kevin Frandsen, Scott Schoeneweis
The Red Sox made a couple moves yesterday to shore up their depth. For starters, Brian Shouse was released and Scott Schoeneweis picked up. It was clear the Sox weren’t too keen on Shouse and his low 80s fastball from day one. Schoeneweis certainly throws harder (88) but hasn’t exactly been effective either. Right now, I’d bank money on Joe Nelson getting a spot...

Sox Acquire Frandsen In Trade, Sign Schoeneweis
Earlier today, the Red Sox acquired infielder Kevin Frandsen from the San Francisco Giants for a player to be named later, or cash… they also signed free agent lefthanded reliever Scott Schoeneweis.
The question is: why?
Frandsen is 27 years old. He appeared in 23 big league games last year, hitting a not-so-robust .140, with one RBI. In announcing the trade, the Boston Globe...

Countdown to Opening Night
The Red Sox did a bunch on the way to Opening Night showdown with the Bombers, adding reserve infielder Kevin Frandsen and "Sporty Spice" Scott Schoeneweis. Frandsen, looking at the data, looks to be the classic "good field, no-hit" infielder. Schoeneweis, who has an awful strikeout to walk ratio that the Sox seem to prize when good, and a similarity score to Mike Kekich, the infamous...

Sox Sign Embree, What to Do With Boof, and the Watch List
Sox Sign Alan Embree
Just after noon yesterday, the Sox officially agreed to a minor league deal with veteran lefty reliever Alan Embree. Embree, who last pitched for the Sox in 2005, comes off a shaky 2009 season that saw him struggle in limited duty, posting an even BB:K ratio (12 BB, 12 K in 24.2 IP) on his way to a 5.29 FIP.
Still, Embree offers depth to a team searching for...

Is Alan Embree Set For A Return Engagement With The Red Sox?
The Red Sox announced they have signed southpaw reliever Alan Embree to a minor league deal, just a few days after the club worked him out at his home in Washington state.
It’s hard to imagine the 40-year-old has much left in his tank, especially in light of his unremarkable 2-2, 5.40, record with Colorado last season (the Rockies declined a $3 million option they held on...

Boston’s bullpen competition takes an interesting turn
The Red Sox’s bullpen search has taken on an interesting look these days.
With Tim Wakefield virtually certain to open the season as No. 5 starter and Dice-K on the shelf, there are two spots open. The favorites are Boof Bonser and Brian Shouse (the latter serving as LOOGY), but there are doubts about both, apparently.
The Red Sox are talking to Alan Embree about a return as...

Non Roster Invitee: Brian Shouse – Red Sox
The highlight of Red Sox camp appears to be whether the team can find a second left handed pitcher out of the bullpen. While I’ve never thought too much of the second lefty myself (I believe it’s more like the third string QB, its already screwed if he comes in) there is nonetheless an endless supply of those in the Northeast who are curious of what is going on in Sox...
