Leafs Alumni Roster (Toronto Mike)

A Winter Classic featuring the Leafs means we're getting an alumni game. That's got me thinking about who I'd like to see out there. Between the pipes, for example, I don't need to see Cujo or Belfour. Give me Bester, Wregget and Potvin, please. Up front, I also want to go heavy with the '83-'93 teams. Yes, it's all about me. Here's a laundry list...

New Blue Jays Threads Leave Me Hoping For Better Primary Senators Jerseys

If you’re familiar with this blog and podcast, by now you’ve probably realized that as fans (and I believe I can speak for all of us here), we sincerely care about the brand and aesthetic look of the Ottawa Senators franchise. Like any franchise, over the past 20 seasons we’ve seen a number of adaptations to the team’s jerseys. During the 1990’s, black sweaters, horrific...

Battle of the Blades III Review: Tessa and David crowned champion

It took three seasons for Battle of the Blades to feature its first female hockey player. It took substantially less time to crown one champion, as Tessa Bonhomme and her partner, David Pelletier, took home the BotB trophy as the big winners of Season three. Bryan Berard and Marie-France Dubreil were the runners up, while Tanith Belbin and Boyd Devereaux finished third. Tessa and...

Odds to win Battle of the Blades (yes for real)

For our American friends, you will not know what Battle of the Blades is unless you somehow are a closet CBC fan. To put it simply, it is Dancing with the Stars on ice but with former hockey players instead of stars. It is the type of show that would only survive in a hockey loving country such as Canada. Yes it has been on multiple seasons. Anyways, the really weird part of this...

Battle of the Blades, Week 1 recap (part 1)

Greetings, nonselective fans of live events that take place on ice! Welcome to the third season of Battle of the Blades, the program that awkwardly combines two of Canada's favourite things, Kurt Browning and Ron Maclean (or hockey and figure skating, I guess, whatever). BotB is apparently the highest-rated program in Canada, a country clearly in need of some mentoring. My name...

Crisis unites ex-Blueshirts Malhotra, Berard

Former Rangers center Manny Malhotra was hit in the face by a puck in Vancouver's win over Colorado on March 16, and underwent two operations on his eye. Defenseman Bryan Berard, a former teammate of Malhotra's in New York, nearly lost his right eye while playing for the Maple Leafs in 2000. Years later, the former Blueshirts connected via text message.

Bourne Blog: Steroids in hockey; why current testing is inadequate

When players show up at training camp after a summer of lifting, as they will this weekend in the NHL, they're as jacked-up as they can possible get. Hell, even I usually felt pretty good about my situation. So it rarely ever crossed my mind that anybody may have used performance-enhancers in the off-season. It was possible that a guy or two worked a little harder than me. ...

Doug Gilmour did it. So did Felix Potvin. Bryan Berard and Dimitri Yushkevich did it at the same time. When Keith Tkachuk did it, Cam Neely went to the media to question Tkachuk's values.Petr Nedved once did it for nearly 18 months straight and Alexi Yashin did it so frequently fans, GMs and team-mates were more than a little sore. But nobody seems to be doing it much anymore.For...

The 10 most brutal NHL injuries of the last decade

(No, the first decade of the 21st century doesn't technically end until 2011. Save your bellyaching. But we've had nine NHL seasons and one stolen from us since 1999-2000, and Yahoo! Sports has decided it's time to rank the best and worst of the last "decade." Enjoy, and snark freely in the comments.)Some of these all-decade lists are lighthearted, nostalgic...

Bryan Berard: The Forgotten Franchise Player

“Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.”-John Wooden There is no better quote on the planet that could describe the career of former NHL defenseman Bryan Berard. Bryan Berard was originally drafted first overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 1995 NHL entry draft. Shortly thereafter, Berard, who had scored 31 goals and 58 assists as a member of the...

NHL Quotes of the Week: December 23, 2007

In case you're wondering why updates have been infrequent recently, I spent a week vacationing in Huatulco, Mexico, where CNN occasionally shows 30 seconds of NHL highlights every four hours. When I got back, it was nice to see that the NHL had been as calm, peaceful, and serene as a Mexican beach, and the following quotes just bear that out.
