Oilers Could Use Puck-Moving Defenseman
from Jim Matheson of The Cult of Hockey, Last year, the Edmonton Oilers’ rallying cry was “where’s the face-off man?” but this year it’s “where’s the puck-mover?”
Without Ryan Whitney, it’s painfully obvious that the Oilers No. 1 need is somebody to get the puck to Taylor Hall and Co for the quick breakout. There are too many...

Best available free agents
With training camps just around the corner, which unsigned free agents could be helpful for teams looking for a late off-season bargain?- Bryan McCabeThough McCabe is 36 years old and past his prime, it’s surprising that he has yet to find a home. McCabe had a solid showing between the Panthers and Rangers last season, compiling 28 points in 67 games. At some point, either via...

Richard Cloutier: McCabe Practicing with Oilers in Edmonton?
I'll start today's blog by making a few random comments, followed by commenting on Bryan McCabe's situation.
- Horrifying news coming out of Russia regarding the crash of a plane with a KHL team on board. The entire hockey world shares in the sadness of this event, from now what must be considered Hockey's Summer from Hell. My thoughts are with the player's wives, children...

Will Older NHL Veterans Find Homes Before Training Camp?
As training camps sit just a couple weeks away, there are still several NHL veterans looking for jobs. Though most of them are in the twilight of their respective careers, most are still searching for one last shot at glory before they decide to call it quits.
However, as September wears on, any chance of these guys being picked up begins to get less and less certain. Though some...

Ranking The Unsigned Veterans
A number of proven NHL commodities remain unsigned as NHL teams begin their preparations for training camp.
Among them is destined Hall of Famer Teemu Selanne, who is still deciding whether to play another year for the Ducks after a stellar 2010-11 season. His decision should come within the next two weeks -- but expect him to return, since Anaheim opens the season in Helsinki.

Possible Help For The Islanders
from Katie Strang of Newsday, Last summer, Islanders GM Garth Snow sent out a blanket invite to any players interested in coming to Long Island on a training camp tryout.
Without the same constraints as last year (remember those God-awful split-squad games?) Snow can afford to be more selective this September.
In the next week or so, expect Snow to extend invites to a handful of...

Richard Cloutier: Propaganda! Part IV + More McCabe
So I was listening to Oilers Now today and the first email read was a question in regards to the Oilers potentially signing Bryan McCabe. Aw, my readers...you loveable knuckleheads, asking Bob Stauffer about the silly little things I say...
As much as certain people hosting certain radio shows in Edmonton are Oilers employees, I have to admit I feel kinda bad whenever...

Richard Cloutier: Rumor: McCabe to Oilers Becoming More Possible
I got in a long conversation today with someone utterly random, but they insist they are connected and knowledgeable about the Oilers defensive situation heading into this season. What was discussed is as follows: - The Oilers have been trying for two months to make a major move to add a significant top pairing defenseman. However, there has been a snag in that a number of teams...

A buyer's guide to the remaining NHL free agents
Hey Teemu, how many days does ittake you each offseason to decide ifyou want to play another year?As August winds down, it's beginning to feel like the entire NHL is on vacation. There's nothing to talk about, because nothing is happening.
That's good news if you're a hockey fan who could use a break before gearing up for the coming season. But it's terrible...

Why is Bryan McCabe still a free agent?
(Photo credit: clydeorama )There are still a few good free agents out there for NHL rosters to snap up. The most shocking Player in my mind still remaining on that list is Bryan McCabe. Can someone please enlighten me as to why McCabe is still a free agent? I realize the St. Catherine's, Ontario native is getting up there in years at 36 years of age and his cap-hit was $5.75 million...

The NHL’s unemployed free-agent defensemen club
Colin White made $3 million for the New Jersey Devils last season, the fifth year of a six-year contract worth $18 million. The team gave him a buyout and he ended up inking a 1-year, $1-million deal with the San Jose Sharks and includes a modified no-trade clause.
So that's the market for a 33-year-old defensive defenseman at this point in the offseason.
The free-agent frenzy...

Speculative Friction
Monday morning quarterbacks…
Armchair GM’s……
One of my favorite things to do, especially in the off season, is to speculate about my teams and the direction they are headed. For the Predators, it has been an off-season that to many has looked similar to the fire sale of 2007. Many fans are left wondering, questioning, and “gnash”ing their teeth about what plans the Predators...

Musings On A Slow Week
It’s been a relatively slow week, not much news, but that doesn’t mean I can’t do a brain dump of a musings for this week. Hope you enjoy my ramblings.
If it costs more than $11 million to sign Brian Boyle, Ryan Callahan, and Brandon Dubinsky; I will be shocked. Absolutely shocked.
Apparently there is interest by the Rangers in Sami Lepisto. The source appeared...

UFA List Dwindling
from Chris Johnston of the CP at the Winnipeg Free Press, The list of players still looking for NHL work includes a goaltender who once took a team to the Stanley Cup final, a former 68-point defenceman and a Selke Trophy winner.
While Ray Emery, Bryan McCabe and John Madden might not be the players they once were, they could each help a team in the right situation.

Draft Day Two Open Thread
The Rangers took J.T. Miller with the 15th overall selection last night, and have three more selections in this draft (#106, #134, #136). The selections they would have had were:
#45 – to Calgary for Tim Erixon.
#57 – Washington’s pick, acquired by the Rangers from Carolina for Bobby Sanguinetti, sent to Calgary for Tim Erixon.
#76 – to Florida for Bryan...

Pending Free Agents: Bryan McCabe
AP PhotoVeteran defenseman Bryan McCabe was acquired by the Rangers on February 26, just two days prior to the 2011 NHL Trade Deadline, mainly for one reason. That reason was to help quarterback the Blueshirts' struggling powerplay and give them the cannon of a shot from the point that they were lacking. In 19 regular season games with the Rangers, he scored twice on the powerplay...
