This Date in Pirates History: February 10
There are six former Pittsburgh Pirates who have been born on this date. I will start with the two most recent ones, Cesar Izturis(1980) played for the 2007 Pirates and Ruben Mateo(1978) played for the 2004 Pirates. Both of them spent less than half the season with the team. Izturis joined the Pirates in July, coming over from the Cubs and Mateo began the 2004 season with the Pirates...

Cesar Izturis is a true professional
For the last year, Cesar Izturis has heard everything. The local media, fans, and even President of Baseball Operations Andy MacPhail have stated their intention of needing more pop to the shortstop position.
Who could blame them? During his two-year career as the starter, Izturis batted .242 with only 3 home runs and 58 RBI’s.
The Orioles were happy to sign Izturis two years ago...

Brewers add Cesar Izturis to utility mix
Yesterday, we took a look at some of the internal options the Brewers have to fill out their bench. Due to the money spent at other positions, it looks like the Brewers will have to get creative to fill out the rest of their 25-man roster. When we got to the utility/middle infielder spot on the bench, there weren't that many attractive internal options. The Brewers added another...

Thin free agent shortstop class fairs well for Izturis
The Orioles haven’t had a solid, reliable shortstop in nearly a decade. The average shortstop last year hit 13 home runs. The last Orioles shortstop to hit more than 13 home runs in a season was Mike Bordick’s 20 long-shots in 2000.
The ballclub selected high school shortstop Manny Machado in the MLB draft this year in the hopes of eventually solidifying their recent history...

The Crystal Ball '11: Cesar Izturis
Cesar Izturis will be returning to Baltimore in 2011. Thankfully, he will not be the everyday option at shortstop as the Orioles inked him to a $1.5 million, one year deal. With incentives, the deal could net Izzy more than $2 mil for next season. He will serve as a utility infielder. But just because he probably doesn't deserve a full time starting job doesn't mean he can...

Trade Bait and a Shortstop
Well, we all know the Orioles might need a shortstop considering Cesar Izturis is a free agent, and there’s no guarantee that he’ll return. Honestly, as good as Cesar was with the glove, I’m sure most fans would prefer to have someone with a tad bit more offense with the bat. That being said, with things on free agent market as it is, the Orioles might be looking to get...

Cesar Izturis and Ineptitude
Cliff Lee should be ashamed of himself.
It’s merely a coincidence that I say that a day after he imploded on a national stage; I’m actually referring to a pitch he threw way back on July 10, an 89-mph fastball on the inner half.
It took me awhile to track down video of the pitch, because it resulted in a Cesar Izturis home run, and the video isn’t on Cesar Izturis...

Shortstops not named Cesar Izturis
Okay … so if I were a betting man, I would put money on the Orioles bringing back Cesar Izturis. All of the noise coming out of the warehouse and the clubhouse is that Buck loves Izzy (which, notably, calls into question some of the things I think I like about Buck – primarily, that he gets it – but I suppose that it’s more important that the front office...
