The Binghamton Mets Use The Lost Art of Bunting to their Advantage

It’s a time honored baseball tradition, but more and more so it seems the sacrifice bunt is becoming a gambit of yesteryear. Modern day managers call for a sacrifice bunt less than the skippers who came before them. When the signal is on for a sacrifice, modern day batters, raised on the hutzpah of the long ball, struggle to lay the ball down and put the ball in play to advance...

Note to potential Blue Jays waiver claim: You will soon be removed from roster

The Toronto Blue Jays have gained some attention as they have claimed several players off waivers since the season started. All teams use waivers as a measurement of the talent they have on the bottom part of their 40 man roster. If a player removed from another team can help a team, it is the reason players are claimed. All teams have interest in upgrading their rosters. The Jays...

Blue Jays claim RHP Beck from Pirates

The Blue Jays have claimed pitcher Chad Beck off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates, bringing the right-hander back to Toronto. The 27-year-old Beck returns to Toronto after being claimed by the Pittsburgh Pirates at the end of last season. He appeared in 14 games for the Blue Jays in 2012, posting a 6.32 earned-run average. In 43 games with triple-A Las Vegas, Beck recorded 18...

Chad Beck Claimed off Waivers by Toronto

Last week the Pittsburgh Pirates designated Chad Beck for assignment to create space for the new additions in the Joel Hanrahan trade. Today the Pirates announced that Beck has been claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto designated him for assignment earlier in the off-season, only for the Pirates to claim him. This is the second year in a row this has happened with...

News and notes

Some news and notes as we head in to the new year… MLB Network did a nice feature on Roberto Clemente, commemorating the 40-year anniversary of his death. Beyond the Box Score posted an extensive analysis on the Bucs’ “strategy” this year against the running game. Very interesting stuff. Tim of PiratesProspects seems to think a Garrett Jones / Gaby Sanchez platoon would...

Pirates Designate Chad Beck For Assignment

The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated reliever Chad Beck for assignment. That clears a spot on the 40-man roster for today’s trade. Beck can be outrighted to Triple-A if he clears waivers. The right-hander was claimed off waivers in October from Toronto, probably so the Pirates could try to sneak him through later in the off-season. He throws 94-97 MPH, but has control issues.

Pirates Interested in Manny Parra

We’ve already heard that the Pirates are interested in left-handed pitcher Manny Parra, among other recently non-tendered pitchers. Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel had an update on Twitter, pointing out that the Pirates and the Mets were both interested in Parra. As I noted last night, Parra would be an interesting option for the bullpen, but his lack of control...

Pirates claim Chad Beck and Ali Solis

The Pirates claimed pitcher Chad Beck and catcher Ali Solis off waivers on Thursday. Jeff Clement and Eric Fryer were designated for assignment to make room for Beck and Solis on the 40-man roster. Obviously, these are pretty minuscule moves in the grand scheme of things, but I’ll briefly break them down anyway. Beck is a 27 year old reliever that was recently DFA by the Blue...

To make room on the 40-man roster, they designated Jeff Clement and Eric Fryer for assignment. Blue Jays recall left-handers Crawford, Laffey

The Blue Jays added left-handed relievers Aaron Laffey and Evan Crawford to the 25-man roster Tuesday, optioning catcher Yan Gomes and right-handed pitcher Chad Beck to Triple-A Las Vegas. Crawford has a 7.36 ERA as a middle reliever in two brief stints with the Blue Jays this season. Laffey should fill the long-relief role. The 27-year-old has pitched for the Indians, Mariners...

It's all good

So, Frasor is back. I seem to recall someone suggesting that possibility a couple of times last month (and also the day after he was traded away) but i can't quite put my finger on it.Oh well, anyway - so with him and the imminent oliver signing, what do we have? we have a pretty damned good idea what the opening day bullpen will look like, with only potential movement in the...

Prospect Week Continues!

This whole business of having a deep deep system takes on a new context given the news of the new CBA today. Frankly, I like Kevin Goldstien's take that pretty much the only good thing to come out of it (in terms of acquiring amateur talent) is the agreement to move up the signing deadline. That said, my tinfoil hat theory is that Paul Beeston saw this coming (having worked closely...

Quick hit: roster management

Handful of minor but interesting moves lately, my thoughts:Adam LoewenI won't repeat Alex's explanation of the mechanics of the deal, if you pay close enough attention to read this blog you surely know. I still hold out hope he'll be back, not just for the story but also because I see him being a valuable reserve OF/1B at a minimum. Still, he has to have cleaner path...
