Bootcheck, 33, signed a minor league deal with Tampa Bay last February and they granted him his release in July. He hasn't appeared in the Major Leagues since he suited up for the 2009...

Game Report: Fighters @ Baystars -- No Points, But New Songs
Thursday the 11th was my first Fighters game of the year, as I trekked down to Yokohama Stadium to see them take on the Yokohama Baystars in a preseason game. I hadn't been to Yokohama Stadium since LAST March's preseason, nor did I actually see the Baystars in a single official season game last year. (I did watch the Shonan Sea Rex, their minor-league affiliate, but that...

PIRATES' LEDEZMA EATS INNINGS, HATS
Does the Pirates' signing of pitcher Wil Ledezma to a minor-league deal today qualify as a hot stove move? No? Well, I'm going to elaborate on his background anyway: his MLB debut was in 2003 with Detroit, he's also spent time with Atlanta, San Diego, Arizona, and most recently, Washington, he's 28 years old, and as you can see from his baseball card, he's left...

Rounding up Pirate news
I had to give lab meeting this week, which is why posting has been a bit light the last few days. The Pirates have managed to do a few small, newsworthy things this week, though, so let's briefly run them down.
Denny Bautista, Chris Bootcheck, and Craig Hansen are off the 40-man roster. Hansen is really the only one of the three that's news, but it probably has more to do with his...

Bootcheck elects for free agency
The Pittsburgh Pirates and reliever Chris Bootcheck have parted ways.
Bootcheck didn’t exactly fit into the Pirates future despite being a 2009 Triple-A All-Star. When the Pirates put him on waivers a few days ago it signaled the end to his time with the organization. So now the soon to be 31-year old former first round [...]

Game 143: Dodgers 5 Pirates 4
The baseball gods tried to tell me to go to bed tonight. Despite having the Extra Innings package, I couldn't watch this game on TV because it was marked as an MLB Network broadcast, even though the MLB Network dropped it everywhere but Pittsburgh in favor of the Giants and Rockies. While a well-adjusted person might have given up right at that point, I've never claimed that...

Game 131: Reds 11 Pirates 5
What in the world compels a team to be 30 games worse on the road than at home? Can anyone honestly answer this question for me? I mean, I understand that Zach Duke and Paul Maholm are better suited for PNC, that our outfield shift works particularly well with the big left-center gap in PNC, and other sorts of things that play to a homefield advantage, but 30 games? And why are we...

The future of the Pirates bullpen
Let’s be blunt. It’s pretty clear that the Pirates have a horrible bullpen right now. Currently on the roster, we have:
Denny Bautista
Chris Bootcheck
Matt Capps
Phil Dumatrait
Jesse Chavez
Joel Hanrahan
Steven Jackson
Yikes. With a lead or in a close game, I would trust exactly two of those guys (and even that trust is a bit shaky): Chavez and Hanrahan. [...]

Cubs Clobber Pirates
This might be a new low. This was horrible. The matinee was broadcast on WGN and I was half tempted to hunker down and watch. I didn't (guilty conscience prevents me from doing so) and am mightily glad I didn't.
The Cubs jumped out early with a four run first off of Charlie Morton. The main damage was a three run homer from Kosuke Fukudome. Then Morton didn't make it...
