Dodgers Season Preview Q&A: 2012

Next up in the series of NL West season preview Q&As: the Los Angeles Dodgers. Chad Moriyama (you can find him on Twitter at @chadmoriyama) was kind enough to answer a few questions about the Dodgers, who are coming off of an 82-79 season. 1. How would you grade the Dodgers’ offseason? C-. The only thing that prevented this off-season from being a disaster was getting Matt...

Did Mets err by picking Mike Pelfrey over Chris Capuano?

Following the 2011 season, the Mets had to make a decision whether to retain the services of two starting pitchers going forward – Chris Capuano and Mike Pelfrey. There were a bunch of factors that went into the decision, not the least of which was that Capuano was a free agent and Pelfrey was arbitration-eligible. This meant that Capuano had the leverage to seek a multi-year...

Pick Your Poison, A Sad Fan's Guide To The Dodgers Off-Season

Many people have railed against the off-season signings Ned Colletti has made for the Dodgers. Colletti was quick to fill out most of his roster this off-season. And in doing so made a few questionable signings. None of the signings as a single entity really hurt the Dodgers chances, but in aggregate they have possibly kept the Dodgers from making the big splash they need to compete...

Whither the Fifth Starter?

This post is semi-syndicated from The Yankee Analysts.I cannot fathom a scenario in which A.J. Burnett is a Yankee come the spring … a palpable scenario, at least. Over the past two seasons, a total of eighty-six starting pitchers have tossed at least 300 IP. Of those, Burnett ranks 85th in ERA, 84th in FIP, and 69th in xFIP (progress!). The pseudo-heroics of the 2009 World Series...

The Los Angeles Dodgers have made good use of the money they have spent over the winter

Instead of making a huge splash in free agency, the Dodgers decided to spread out their resources. It will be interesting to see if it’s enough to get them back into the race in the N.L. West, but at least they are trying. Here’s a look at the new faces: In the field: The biggest addition in the field of play for the Dodgers was the signing of 2B Mark Ellis. He will take...

Was the 2011 Mets staff really lucky with injuries?

Recently, I discussed the projected offense for the 2012 Mets. Today, let’s talk about the pitching. Most fans’ top concern regarding the 2012 season is how the starting pitching is going to stack up. Implied in that worry is the knowledge that the Mets were fortunate with injuries to their starters last year, as the club had five SP make 149 of the team’s 162 starts. They...

My Best Mets Moments Of 2011

Yes, there were some forgettable moments in 2011, but they weren’t all bad. These were five of my favorite moments last season. Best Moment #5 The Mets beat the Phillies 2-1 in a 14 inning nail-biter at Citizens Bank Park. But the best moment of the night came in the middle of the game when the crowd began to chant ‘USA – USA” as news broke that President...

Trade With Henchmeister's Junk Blog: Former Dodgers I Wish Had Never Been In Anything But Blue As 2011 Closes Up Shop.

On a side note, I've listed my first ever item on eBay. The auction ends early tomorrow morning....check it out, especially if you're a New York Giants fan! Anyhoo, I completed my second trade with Chris of Henchmeister's Junk Blog. I sent him a new Jacoby Ellsbury, a Black Diamond Pedroia, an early Papi, and some assorted BoSox. My favorites that I received in return...

Top Moment #20: K-Rod Falters, Phillies Comeback

It wasn’t too long ago when the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets had a very heated rivalry. Both teams were fighting for the National League East, but over the last couple of years the Phillies have separated themselves from the rest of the division while the Mets found themselves near the cellar. The Phillies/Mets rivalry wasn’t as intense in 2011, but any Phillies...

Chris Capuano, Better Than You Think

It's time to look at one of the new additions to the Dodgers rotation and which pitchers around the majors have a similar skill set as him. Chris Capuano was signed as a free-agent after leaving the New York Mets. Capuano does have peripherals that compare to some pretty good pitchers like Ian Kennedy and Matt Garza. Capuano did put up much better stats at home than on the...

Cubs have interest in Paul Maholm

MLBTR had a post yesterday that the Cubs are in negotiations with Paul Maholm for a spot in their 2012 rotation.  Earlier in the offseason, the Pirates declined Maholm’s 2012 option for $9.75 million.  Based on the market for pitchers like Chris Capuano (2 years, $10 million from the Dodgers), Bruce Chen (2 years, $9 million from the Royals), and Erik Bedard (1 year, $4.5 million...

Finally the Dodgers Rotation is Complete

For about the same money, the Dodgers will replace Hiroki Kuroda in their starting rotation with Chris Capuano and Aaron Harang. Harang will be paid $12 million over two years, while Capuano will receive $10 million over two years. Last year, Kuroda was paid $12 million (with $4 million deferred) for one year.

Exploring a Trade of Jonathan Niese

As the landscape of professional baseball continues to shift toward homegrown, cheap, controllable players, the one glaring market inefficiency has become the most prized asset on the field: The starting pitcher. It's no secret that pitchers, especially the elite ones, who reach free agency will set their families up to live extremely comfortable lives for several generations...

ESPN's Jim Bowden Predicts Kuroda to Yankees

In his column "10 moves that might happen", Bowden doesn't have much mention of the Dodgers, besides what we would lose (link insider only): 4. Hiroki Kuroda signs with the New York Yankees for one year, $13 million One of the most underrated pitchers in the free-agent market, Kuroda would fit in nicely with the New York Yankees. He and a healthy Phil Hughes would...

Stubbs Licks a Stat

Well, here we are then. It seemed clear what our off-season needs were pretty much the instant the season's final out was recorded. Now we're well into Hot Stove territory and... we still know exactly what our off-season needs are. What I'm having trouble with is figuring out just what kind of team we're trying to be.Early moves suggested that we might be going for...

Rubby Injury Forces Dodgers To Spend Riches

In free agency, the Los Angeles Dodgers struck quickly signing a pair of classic 4-5 starters to stabilize the back of their big league rotation in veterans Chris Capuano and Aaron Harang. When healthy, Capuano has proven to be a solid starter over his career providing relatively strong peripherals and should prove a discount over the life of the contract if he logs even 300 innings...

Is L.A. Really The Place To Be?

I love rap, especially 80’s and 90’s rap. To me it’s an expression of poetry in song, spoken word to a beat and Tupac has a great song that always affirms my love for Los Angeles To Live and Die In LA “To Live and Die In LA, it’s the place to be, You got to be there to know it, everybody wanna see.” It seems free agents sure think so. The Dodgers have now signed this...

Dodgers Winter Meetings: Final Day Recap

So the Dallas Winter Meetings are over, and while Colletti failed to make a big splash, he also didn't do a whole lot of damage either. We did find out from Dylan Hernandez that the Dodgers will not be bidding on Yu Darvish. I have my shocked face on right now. The Dodgers finalized their deal with Aaron Harang today. I love the one year at $3MM for 2012, however 2013 we are...

Angels Sign LaTroy Hawkins

For one year, dollars currently unknown, but I would expect it to be in the $3-4M range. Last year represented the final year of a two-year deal with the Brewers that was worth $4.25M, but free agent pitching has been bid up considerably with the deals the Dodgers did for Aaron Harang and Chris Capuano. Hawkins had a pretty good season last year, a 3-1 record with a 2.42 ERA, and...

There Goes My Hiro

While he hasn't officially signed with another MLB team (or returned to Japan) yet, the signings of Chris Capuano and Aaron Harang by the Dodgers all but spell the end of the Hiroki Kuroda era in L.A. (Unless, of course, the team finds some money under the couch cushions and decides to carry six starters. Six starters? Inconceivable!)Here's the thing, though. We kept hearing that...

The Dodgers Are Having the Opposite of a Youth Movement

What is the opposite of a youth movement?  An un-youth movement?  A maturity movement?  An elderly movement?  Whatever it is, the Dodgers are doing it. You have to give the Dodgers credit, despite being tied up in bankruptcy and an ownership dispute, they've been mighty active.  They started the off-season with a bang by locking up superstar Matt Kemp to a lucrative long...

Dodgers, Harang Agree To Two-Year Deal

The Dodgers and Aaron Harang have agreed to a two-year deal worth roughly $12MM, according to Jon Heyman of the MLB Network (on Twitter). Harang, 33, enjoyed a nice rebound campaign with his hometown Padres in 2011. The former Reds ace notched 170 2/3 innings, his highest total since 2008, while posting a solid ERA of 3.64, striking out 6.5 per nine, and walking 3.1 per nine....
