Nationals Gets the Best of the O's; Quick Hits...
The Orioles lost 3-1 to the Nationals yesterday in Fort Lauderdale; however, Koji Uehara looked good -- real good. The Japanense hurler, coming back from a strained hamstring, did give up a run, but struck out seven out of the eleven hitters he faced. His counterpart on the mound for Washington, young Sharion Martis pitched six shutout innings and only gave up three hits, while fanning...

An Old Friend (Chris Gomez) Returns
Ah, "Fresh Hands", is back in Charm City on a minor league deal. Honestly, the Orioles should have never let this guy go, and after the trainwreck we saw at shortstop in 2008, you could see why. From MLB Trade Rumors: According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles signed infielder Ch... ...

RIP Vince Lascheid
Sad news today, as long-time Pirates and Penguins organist Vince Lascheid has at the age of 85. Everyone that's been to a Pirate game has spent some sitting in the stands, trying to decipher just what Lascheid's had in mind with the jingles he used to choose for opposing players. I still remember being at Three Rivers in the late 1990s with Chris Gomez at the plate for the...

The triumphant return of Chris Gomez
In Baltimore, today’s what we call a fast news day.
The mayor’s been indicted by a grand jury for perjury, theft, fraudulent misappropriation and misconduct.
If the Ravens beat Tennessee tomorrow, they’re in the AFC championship.
We’ve had 12 murders in the first nine days of 2009.
The city’s in a panic about regionwide gridlock on inauguration day.
But the [...]

Chris Gomez (1B/3B-PIT)
Russell inserted Chris Gomez into the lineup on Tuesday, paying notice to Gomez's career numbers against Mets starter Johan Santana. Gomez came into the game 8-for-14 against the New York lefty, but went 0-for-3 against him on Tuesday. Though he has played the majority of his career as a shortstop, t...

Chris Gomez is a Pirate no more.
I really like Nicolas' idea to do a sort of Pirates' "Futures Game." I'm pretty sure the team used to do something like this in the 90s, but

Justin Christian Signs With Baltimore
From Peter Schmuck:The O's signed another player to a minor league contract. He's an outfielder named Justin Christian and he appeared in 24 games with the Yankees last year before being non-tendered. He had 40 at-bats and batted .250 with seven stolen bases in eight attempts. Sounds like he'll ...

Fool Me Once, Shame on You, Fool Me Twice...
Memo to Matt Wise from Keith Herandez: Don't throw the high change twice in a row.* Walk-off loss number 372 is the earliest walk-off loss in Mets history BY DATE. The previous mark was held by the 6-5 12-inning walk-off loss against the Padres on April 2, 1997, when Chris Gomez beat Toby Borland wit...

The Pirates are talking to Mark Loretta
There are a couple of possible reactions when reading that the Pirates are talking to Mark Loretta. The easy reaction is, "Well, so long as he's replacing Chris Gomez, I'm fine with that." That's true. Loretta's a useful utility infielder that can still handle a bat fairly well and can play just ...

Hayden Penn out of the Baltimore Organization; Andino an Oriole...
The big news from yesterday -- perhaps minor in the wide of scheme of things -- is that formerly prized prospect, Hayden Penn was traded to the Florida Marlins for infielder Robert Andino. What's the big deal with Andino? Not much. He's simply a nice, slick fielding fielder who's your typical 'all glove, no bat' type of guy. Obviously with Hanley Ramirez at shortstop...

More Rumors, Anyone?
You guessed it, Jack Wilson. [The Detroit Free Press] says the talks are "ongoing" and that "there appears to be genuine interest on both sides." Although the Pirates aren't going to get great value for Wilson, the Detroit system is [not exactly chalk-full of prospects], so this is something to ...

Ho-Hum: Cubs best Buccos 5-1
The Cubs were going up against a pitcher they've regularly scored on, yet have never pinned a loss on, in Paul Maholm. Today? Another 5 ER tacked onto Maholm's record, this time resulting in a Cubs win. It was an idyllic day for a Ted Lilly outing, with a stiff breeze coming in from CF, but Lilly's best moment came on strikeouts of Chris Gomez and Luis Rivas. That was...

Jack Wilson goes on the DL
The Pirates' middle infield situation is quickly becoming ugly. After six games, Chris Gomez and Luis Rivas have almost as many ABs as Freddy Sanchez and Jack Wilson. The Pirates may be 3-3, but that's not a recipe for great baseball. Accordingly, Wilson's going to go on the DL to nurse his hamstring...

Who Saw This One Coming?
For once, looking back on this Pirates game, it's very easy to say I could have predicted plenty of things that happened. Particularly the success of various pitchers (and of course, the outcome).-Reds starter Josh Fogg loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning. The Pirates got three. In the second, Chris Gomez hit his first homer of the year (yeah, that's how bad...

Thanks again to Mike Stanton for his contribution to the 2009 Nationals rotation.
Shairon Martis keeps making his case.
Lannan, Olsen, Cabrera, Zimmermann, Martis? Ok, go with that.
On the heels of Martis' solid performance against the O's yesterday, Mark Zuckerman provides this warning:
It should be noted, though...

Brewers 4, Pirates 3
I saw none of the game, but here's what I can gather:-CC and Maholm both pitched pretty decent games. Neither factored into the decision--Paul gave up 2 runs in 6 and CC gave up one in 7.-The Bucs were down 1 in the 9th, and old buddy Salomon Torres blew a save. That had to be an enjoyable moment.-In the 12th, the Pirates loaded the bases with no outs. Moss, Gomez, and Rivas all...
