Throughout the 2013-2014 NHL season, I’ll be posting player features each Friday. This week, we’re going to take a look at Chuck Kobasew.
This 6-foot, 192-pound forward has played with his fair share of NHL teams, and he was eventually signed to a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins...
Coming out of the Olympic break, the Pittsburgh Penguins are going to have lineup deliberations.
Expected to have 13 healthy forwards and seven able-bodied defensemen, somebody is inevitably going to be benched.
Here’s a look at the potential fillers:
There are some spoilers in here
That being said, these aren’t going to be a perfect matchup. If you have a better connection, leave a comment below. If we like it, we’ll add it to the post and credit you.
Rick Grimes - Mario Lemieux: Lemieux was called upon to save the Penguins, especially when he didn’t have to. Mario stepped up big time to ensure the safety of the...

Fleury Bouncing Back
After setting himself up for a career year in the first three months of the season, Marc-Andre Fleury had a rough January. He posted save percentages below .900 in five of his nine starts and allowed more than three goals in just as many games. Despite these numbers, he still posted seven wins in to give himself an NHL-leading...

Sid Needs a Right Winger
Since the injury of Pascal Dupuis on New Year’s Eve, Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz have been trying to keep the first line together with duct tape and bubble gum. In the last 10 games Crosby and Kunitz have skated at even strength with, among others...
The objective of this post was to document how ROOT Sports is using too many "cut shots" during the course of a game. We were going to watch the ROOT Sports broadcast and note all of the cut shots, then do the same thing with the Penguins’ opponent’s broadcast. We didn't even have to do a whole game to prove our point.
What we did
We fired up...
Last night’s 5-1 loss to the Panthers tied the worst regular-season home loss in the Dan Bylsma era. There have been other rough losses, but our definition of "worst" is the biggest goal differential.
January 10, 2012 -- 5-1 loss to the Senators. Box score.
Vaguely remember this one.
January 8, 2011 -- 4-0 loss to the Wild. Box score.
It could be the rust. It could be Paul Martin and Jayson Megna and Chuck Kobasew coming back. Or it's just the middle of January. Panthers came into CONSOL and smoked the Pens 5-1, ending their home winning streak. **** happens.
OUR THREE STARS
3. Jonathan Huberdeau -- Didn't have much on the stat sheet, but he was everywhere all night.
2. Drew Shore -- Whoever...

Remember hockey? It's back! In Pens versus Panthers form!
James Neal and Paul Martin should be back in the line-up. Chuck Kobasew and Jayson Megna too.

Troy Bodie vs Robert Bortuzzo (2-0)Dec 16, 2013 1pd 15:062013-2014 Regular SeasonThis fight transpired when Bodie rubbed Borts out on the corner and finishes with a forearm shiver on his head. Bortuzzo chases him to the slot and tosses the mitts. Bobby Bo hits Bodie with a large right to start the bout maybe before Bodie knew what was going on. Bodie returns with a big bomb that...
The Pittsburgh Penguins welcomed some familiar faces back to full practice today.
Paul Martin, Jayson Megna, and Chuck Kobasew all returned to full practice today.
The presence of Martin and Megna is a welcomed sight. Paul Martin has been the Penguins most dependable and best player at the defense position for the past year and a half. Anytime you lose a player of that caliber...
We can’t be the only ones who have noticed the Penguins’ offensive formula that has formed over the past month or so. While the team has been ravaged with injuries, the top two lines have carried the load big-time. But even if with a full, healthy roster, barring a trade, there’s still zero to no hope for the Pens’ bottom six.
We looked at the Pens’ stats from the last...
Minnesota Wild defenseman Keith Ballard delivered a huge hip-check along the boards on Penguins forward Chuck Kobasew last night. Here's the slow motion replay of Pittsburgh's right wing going airborne in GIF form. Following the hit, Kobasew actually got up and fought Ballard. You can see that here.Related:GIF: Jason Spezza dances around Dylan OlsenGIF: Giroux's falling...
Few teams were as interested as the Pittsburgh Penguins' front offices were in this week's NHL Board of Governors meetings. Yet, the Pens interest in the meetings at Pebble Beach, California had little to do with the drama surrounding the Thornton/Orpik fiasco. Rather, one integral topic that was being covered had the potential to affect the immediate futures of...
Facing the second best team in the Western Conference without Evgeni Malkin was not an ideal situation. But it is exactly what the Pittsburgh Penguins had to do tonight after Malkin left the morning skate with a lower body injury. Chuck Kobasew returned to the lineup but that is hardly an even trade. But it…
A combination of the losses from free agency during the last offseason, the lowering of the salary cap preventing Ray Shero from filling out his bottom 6, and injuries to the players that were signed has led to a lot of young, unfamiliar faces finding a spot on the Penguins at forward at times this season. Injuries to Beau Bennett, James Neal, Chuck Kobasew, Matt D'Agostini,...
It’s getting so you can’t tell who’s on the ice and who’s in the hospital ward for the Penguins these days. In rapid succession the club lost Beau Bennett (wrist surgery), Tanner Glass (broken hand) and, now, top defenseman Paul Martin (broken tibia). Combined with previous injuries to defensive stalwart Rob Scuderi and forward Chuck Kobasew and the loss of winger Matt D’Agostini—who...
With the Penguins a little more than 15% through their 2013-2014 season I wanted to take a look at how Head Coach Dan Bylsma has been utilizing his roster.
The number one job of a coach is to put their players in the best position to succeed. Sometimes injuries play a role in that decision making process and you find players playing out of position. Chuck Kobasew, Tanner Glass...

The 2013 playoffs happened. Nothing that takes place tonight is going to change that. "Revenge" for a postseason loss isn't really possible in an October game. However, it would be nice to see if the Penguins have learned how to score...
Chuck Kobasew will be lost for 3-4 weeks with a lower body ailment, this per an announcement on the clubs twitter feed. This is just another in a list of injured players for the Pittsburgh Penguins so far this year.
After attending camp on a PTO and playing well, (he scored two goals in 12 games and averaged 12:32 TOI per night), the Penguins signed Kobasew, 31, to a one year deal...
The Penguins have yet another injured player whose down time likely will be lengthy.
Winger Chuck Kobasew will miss the next three to four weeks, coach Dan Bylsma said Tuesday. Kobasew got an unspecified injury Monday against Carolina when he absorbed a heavy check from Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason.
Kobasew earned a roster spot and a contract after attending Penguins training...
Pittsburgh Penguins forward Chuck Kobasew is out for at least three weeks with a lower body injury.
Coach Dan Bylsma says Kobasew was hurt in the first period of Monday's 3-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Kobasew, who signed with Pittsburgh as a free agent in the offseason, has two goals in 12 games for the Penguins.
Kobasew's injury came one game after the Penguins...

Rookie winger Jayson Megan scored his first NHL goal and defenseman Brooks Orpik had a career-high three assists to lead the Penguins to a 3-1 victory against Carolina at PNC Arena tonight.
The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Penguins (8-4).
They played much of the game without right winger Chuck Kobasew, who adjourned to the locker room after absorbing a hard...
Pittsburgh Penguins forward Chuck Kobasew is out with a lower-body injury and will be re-evaluated, as per the team’s official Twitter account. Kobasew left Monday night’s game in the first period following a hit he took. He played only 2:33 against the Carolina Hurricanes before leaving.
The 31-year-old forward started the game on the team’s third line with Sutter and Megna...
