The 2013 season has just come to an end but there are a few things running through my mind as I think about next season. The first thing we discussed was whether or not there will be a ‘thing’ at quarterback this spring, which you can read here. The next item we’ll discuss is the prospects at running back.
RUNNING BACK ISSUES? This might not be a popular opinion but I just...
Jordan Canzeri was essentially forgotten for most of the year as Iowa leaned on fellow running backs Mark Weisman and Damon Bullock.
Canzeri enters Iowa's most crucial stretch of the season more valuable than ever.
Canzeri did more than just give Weisman and Bullock a breather in Iowa's last game, a 38-14 romp at Purdue on Nov. 9. The sophomore revived Iowa's stumbling...

The Iowa Hawkeyes received some very good news on Tuesday night when Kirkwood, MO running back Markel Smith announced to the world that he was heading to Iowa.
Though his tweets are protected, this one was retweeted:
“@WizKELifa23 I committed to Iowa”
He also said this to Rob Howe
Markel Smith: "I'm done. No more visits or anything. I'm going to Iowa."
Wisconsin returns to action after a bye week and has to travel to Iowa. The rivals haven't played since 2010, but with both teams going to be back in the same division, this is a game that will be played every year now.
The Badgers, by the way, have won six straight games after a regular-season off week, including one this season.
I expect a tight game, but No. 22 Wisconsin is...
Iowa (5-3, 2-2) defeated Northwestern (4-4, 0-4) today inside Kinnick Stadium, 17-10, in overtime.
Iowa is 6-3 all-time in overtime games, 2-1 inside Kinnick Stadium. Today was Iowa’s first overtime game at home since 2007 (W, 34-27 vs. Michigan State, Oct. 27, 2007).
Iowa scored touchdowns on its first and last possessions of the day.
Iowa opened the game with a touchdown drive...
This was not a pretty game. Well, the first quarter for Iowa, that was pretty. The offense did what it wanted, most of it on the ground as Iowa rushed for nearly 100 yards. Iowa scored on its first and third possessions of the game.
After that? They didn’t score again until overtime.
The game was able to get to overtime because Northwestern is a physically beaten down team...
Carlos Hyde ran for 149 yards, including 106 yards and two touchdowns in the second half, to lead No. 4 Ohio State to a 34-24 victory over Iowa on Saturday.
It was the Buckeyes' 19th consecutive victory, the most in the nation and tying the second-best streak in school history.
But it didn't come easy. The Hawkeyes (4-3, 1-2 Big Ten) dominated offensively in the first half...

The Iowa Hawkeyes (4-1, 1-0 Big Ten) will be facing some déjà vu when the Michigan State Spartans (3-1, 0-0) visit Kinnick Stadium on Saturday.
Head coach Kirk Ferentz and company are off to their best start in four years and are riding a four-game winning streak.
A win against the Spartans will be evidence that the Hawkeyes are ready to challenge no. 17 Northwestern and no. 19...
The Iowa Hawkeyes face Missouri State on Saturday in what could turn out to be one of the most important games of the season.
Yes, I typed that.
No, I was not compensated by the University ticket office to do so.
Yes, I believe it.
Here are a few of the reasons why I believe this to be true, even though the outcome is all but a foregone conclusion…
THE STREAK: It’s seven...
(Eds: With AP Photos.) By LUKE MEREDITH AP Sports Writer Iowa lost again last weekend, its seventh straight defeat dating to last season and its first in an opener in 13 years.
And yes, it came against MAC school Northern Illinois, a team the Hawkeyes had beaten eight times in a row. It didn't help that the game swung on a late interception by new quarterback Jake Rudock.
Iowa's one-point win over Northern Illinois in last season's opener felt like an escape for the Hawkeyes.
Iowa would view a similar result in Iowa City on Saturday as a sign of progress.
Nearly everything about these programs has changed in the 12 months since they last met. The Hawkeyes finished last season with a six-game losing streak and its worst finish since 2000...
The Hawkeyes met with the media on Tuesday as they prepared to open the season this weekend against Northern Illinois. See what Mark Weisman, Damon Bullock, Christian Kirksey, Carl Davis, Johnny Lowdermilk, Jordan Lomax, Brandon Scherff and others had to say in this Prime Cuts video compilation.
The BTN gang made their annual stop in Iowa City on Tuesday. The TV show portion of the stop will air later this week but the tweets were coming out of the indoor facility during the morning. More tweets will be added throughout the day. Posting the oldest tweets at the top so you can follow in chronological order.
Have arrived at Iowa – final stop on our tour. Just checked...

Media Day offers many a look, question and some silliness. It’s just what these things are. Media Day also finds about 15 or more variations of the following answer: we’ll know more in a few weeks.
Such was the case this year, but there was also some meat on the bone.
Greg Davis: First 4 practices, every snap has been no-huddle. @DMRHawkeyes @TheIowaHawkeyes @DMRsports #hawkeyes...
COACH FERENTZ: Welcome to everybody. Between Chicago and last week in Connecticut, it seems like this never ends here. It’s like a caravan right now.
But welcome, everybody, and just starting out on a little bit more of a serious note, certainly want to express our condolences first and foremost to Ron Fairchild and his family. Ron as many of you know went to school here...
I’ve delayed this long enough. Time to dive in and see what the cracked crystal ball says for this year.
Before we do that, here is an accountability exercise; how have I done in other years attempting to predict Iowa’s season record?
I’ve compiled all of my Iowa football preseason predictions dating back to the 2001 Iowa football season. I launched HawkeyeNation.com on April...
This is Part Two of a three part series. Links to Parts I & III are at the bottom of this item.
Do you see Mark being a 20-carry back?
I could see that. I could see that.
Would that be good for this offense?
What did he have, 5.3 [yards] a carry? Twenty times five, I’d take that.
For a while he averaged 8 yards a carry.
Twenty times eight is even better. That’s unrealistic...
COACH FERENTZ: Welcome, everybody. Everybody that’s been up here so far, we’re excited to get started, certainly. And we’re enthused about our football team. Last year was obviously very disappointing for all of us, and as soon as the season ended in November, we encouraged our players to turn the page and wanted to get them looking forward and then go back to work...
Last summer, even the biggest Iowa fans barely knew who Mark Weisman was.
The walk-on fullback is now one of the most important parts of Iowa's offense, and his health will be crucial for the Hawkeyes in 2013. Weisman unexpectedly emerged as one of the top running backs in the Big Ten a year ago before nagging injuries limited his effectiveness.
Iowa was at its best when Weisman...

The 2012 Iowa football season will not likely be remembered for much other than the team went 4-8 and missed bowl eligibility for the first time since 2000. However, that team was a few plays away from being 9-3. They were also a few plays way from being 2-10.
Iowa v NIU: Iowa won this game 18-17 on a late touchdown by Damon Bullock. It was a gutsy call on third and and long...
