All Quiet on the Cubs Front
These few weeks before spring training starts is about as dull as it gets around these parts. We're all still waiting on Cespedes, but with Jedstein and their cone of silence, it's not like we can expect many leaks. There's also the case of the musical 40-man roster chairs with the Cubs having to drop someone once they add Gerardo Concepcion. Vegas money should be on...

The Revolving Door At Second
No aspect of the 2012 Cardinals comes with more questions than the middle infield, where one position has no clear starter and one has a veteran with something to prove. Rafael Furcal returns on a two-year contract with the Redbirds, hoping to show he can still play at the high level he displayed as recently as 2009, while the team goes into Spring Training with an open competition...

Second Banana, Not In This Bunch
Last year we saw an influx of talent come up to the MLB level, and it has added much need depth for this year’s crop of second baseman. Some rookies that got their big league chance last year were Darwin Barney, Dustin Ackley, Jason Kipnis, and Jemile Weeks. They all bring a slightly different game to the table than the others and provide an option should u pass on the big...

TPR Position Overviews: Second Base
Each position seems to have a theme that runs throughout. With the catchers, we were looking at teams that would want to upgrade their position. At first base, we saw several solid first basemen still available on the free agent market. For second basemen, 2012 could be a year of redemption for several second sackers.
Naturally, we will still look at the leaders in each category...

Cuban Defector Yoenis Cespedes Stealing the International Player Spotlight
Yu Darvish can kindly move over, because Yoenis Cespedes is stealing the show. Cespedes is ready to join the MLB after defecting from Cuba, and is showcasing himself via Youtube/Vimeo. I missed out on his first video, but his most recent scouting video caught my attention. It is basically a 28-minute resume, showcasing Cespedes’ freakishly athletic skills with some baseball...

The Chicago Cubs, a Prince and a Vegan … a Match made in Cubs heaven
Hello again, everyone and happy Friday to you all. The Cubs stove has been simmering for weeks now, but we have not even come close to a hard boil. However, I have a distinct feeling that is all about to change. From Sapporo to Milwaukee, baseball news now comes from all over the globe, and the news is going to start rolling in to Chicago.
So, let’s get to some rambling and...

Cubs interested in Japanese infielder Nakajima
The New York Yankees submitted the winning bid for the rights to negotiate with Japanese infielder Hiroyuki Nakajima, though they don’t appear to have much interest in signing him. Enter the Chicago Cubs. The 29 year old Nakajima has spent most of his career at shortstop but he could represent a significant upgrade at second base for the Cubs. Nakajima had a career .880...

Hiroyuki Nakajima: Sign-And-Trade Possibilities
On Tuesday, we took a look at the New York Yankees surprise acquisition of SS Hiroyuki Nakajima via a $2.5M positing bid — the lowest bid for a position player since 2000. Now, it sounds increasingly likely that the Yankees will explore trades for the 29-year-old infielder.
According to Ken Rosenthal, the Chicago Cubs and the San Francisco Giants are both interested in Nakajima...

Rebuilding my Cubs
Ok, so I live in Northern California and you likely care a whole lot more about the Giants, for good reason. Heck, you might even like the A's and if so, good for you. However, I am a Cubs fan and they have issues, BIG issues, and those issues are on my mind. Lots of talk about them signing Prince Fielder but I think that would be a mistake, not because he isn't a great run...

Vote: Will Red Sox or Cubs Win a World Series Faster?
The Red Sox snapped their World Series curse at 86 years in 2004, but the Cubs' championship drought is still 103 years strong. Theo Epstein, the general manager who helped bring a title to Boston, now heads to Chicago to bring home a trophy to Wrigley Field. He inherits some high-priced stars like Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Zambrano, and a young double-play combination with...

From the Fayetteville Swampdogs
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Fayetteville SwampDogs announced today the final addition to the 2012 coaching staff. Three-year player and local standout Ben Moore will don the SwampDogs pinstripes once again – this time in a new role.

BBA NL Willie Mays Award Ballot 2011
After a full year of writing nonsense, the Baseball Blogger Alliance has yet to kick us out and still encourages us to vote on stuff. And not just things we know like "how good did I look in dress socks and sandals." Which, of course, the answer is always "very." Next up is the Willie Mays award for rookie of the year. 1. Top 20 2nd Basemen, 2011 Fantasy Baseball
We already went over the top 20 catchers and the top 20 1st basemen for 2011 fantasy baseball. Today, it’s all about the top 20 2nd basemen. The 2nd basemen pool was shallow, and, for the first time in as long as I can remember, the 2nd basemen, shortstops and 3rd basemen were more or less of equal depth. For instance, Darwin Barney was ranked 20th for 2nd basemen and 19th...

Cubs’ Darwin Barney having better at-bats
With his first full major-league season winding down, second baseman Darwin Barney seems to have caught a second wind. He started the season winning rookie of the month in April and hitting .296 in May but tailed off in August (.255) and September (.227). He has hit safely in five of his last seven games, however, including getting the game-tying hit Thursday in the ninth in Cincinnati...

Cubs Extend Fleita, Wilken Possibly Next
Over the weekend, Tom Ricketts had the audacity to spend his own money on a guy he seems to believe is good at what he does. Someone whom the Detroit Tigers and possibly a few other organizations believed in as well. Some folks reacted as you might expect.
Why is that stupid? Because that’s one of the prime positions that general managers want to fill. That’s not a position...
