5 best players without a green jacket
One of the most popular labels in golf is the best player to have never won a major, which can be looked at two ways. The bad news is that it means a player has never won a major. The good news is that he's at least thought highly enough to be considered.
The best player at Augusta National to have never won the Masters?
That stings a little bit more.
Just ask Greg Norman...
Mickelson's 60 marvelous, and cruel
Phil Mickelson held his head in horror on the ninth green, his 18th of the day. His 26-foot putt birdie putt for 59 curled around the hole and stayed out.
"It's crushing," Mickelson said, "because you don't get that chance very often."
David Duval, who shot one of golf's magical 59s, tweeted: "he just got robbed."
No one would disagree...
Now Tiger knows what it's like
Welcome to everyone else's world, Tiger.
The worlds of Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson, David Duval, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Lee Westwood and any number of players who have had to sit in press conferences and face questions about someone other than themselves.
Woods got a taste of what it's like to be badgered about another player when he sat down with the press...
McIlroy's megadeal comes with risk
The worst-kept secret in golf is out of the bag.
Nike, which outside of Tiger Woods has made a string of bad bets in golf sponsorship -- from David Duval to Anthony Kim -- hopes to turn its fortunes around by pegging its future in the sport to Rory McIlroy.
The ubiquitous Swoosh, which has relied almost entirely on Woods to drive its golf product, announced on Monday a deal with...

Financial woes bring more perspective to Duval
About the only thing that comes easily for David Duval these days is the ability to find perspective.
Duval was talking late Monday night about the ''gigantic financial hit'' he has taken from the real estate collapse, the solution he worked out with the bank over money owed on his home in the Denver suburb of Cherry Hills Village, and the strain it has caused during...
David Duval, Former World No.1 Ranked Golfer, Faces Foreclosure of Colorado Mansion
When David Duval shot a 59 at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in April 1999 to win the tournament on the final hole and vault to the No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Rankings, he was on top of the world. In July 2012? Not so much. The former 2001 British Open champion has won nearly $19 million over the course of his career -- not including endorsements -- yet apparently finds...

Can't rain on these players' parades
When the last of his 22 putts at the 18th hole -- or was it 23, because it's so hard to keep track from beneath an umbrella? -- had been rolled and Morten Orum Madsen had completed his practice round in preparation of the 141st British Open, the pride of Silkeborg, Denmark, acknowledged the marshals standing to the rear of the green.
"Did you enjoy yourself today?"...

Clarke struggles after Open victory
Maybe now that Darren Clarke has relinquished the old Claret Jug he can get on with the rest of his career. Maybe now he can start playing decent golf instead of the dross he's been serving up for much of the past 12 months.
Clarke has been conspicuous by his absence since his surprise win at Royal St. George's 12 months ago. In fact, Clarke went 10 months without making...
Before Duval, there was Baker-Finch
Ian Baker-Finch loves golf.
The truth is he should hate it. Especially during this, of all weeks.
As a past champion, Baker-Finch should be competing at Royal Lytham and St. Annes. But, for the 15th straight year, the CBS television analyst won't be in the field at the British Open, which begins Thursday.
"I would like to be able to compete and enjoy the experience, but...
Duval content, even as wins go away
Conventional wisdom suggested David Duval would soar yet higher after his 2001 British Open success. One headline trumpeted the "rise of King David." One first paragraph foresaw ascension because his modus operandi had been to elevate after previous breakthroughs. Duval himself fostered the notion, saying, "I imagine this will intensify my drive."
Instead, the...

Lengthened Lytham deceptively difficult
The views aren't much. The Irish Sea, only a half-mile to the west, is separated from the golf course by a tree-lined railway line and six blocks of Victorian housing. Yet in Lancashire, 240 miles northwest of central London, sandy dunes ideal for golf await on a course rated No. 22 on Golfweek's Best Classic Courses list in Great Britain & Ireland.
At first glance,...
