PHOENIX (AP) The Arizona Diamondbacks have avoided arbitration with reliever David Hernandez, signing him to a one-year, $2 million contract.
The contract is non-guaranteed, meaning he could be released in spring training and be paid far less.
The hard-throwing right-hander missed all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

PHOENIX -- If the third week of March demonstrated nothing else, it ice-picked home the point that you can never have enough pitching.
You can appear to have enough pitching. You can think you have enough pitching. But you never do.
The season-surgeries to Patrick Corbin and David Hernandez drove that home.
So pitching, as usual, will be high on the Diamondbacks' agenda when the...

PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks' bullpen was a sore point in the first half of 2013, and despite a major tweak, not much has changed so far this year.
The D-backs lost four- and two-run leads while losing three of four games in their home-soil-opening series against the Giants, the latter coming when Will Harris gave up five runs in the top of the eighth inning in San Francisco's 8-5...
The nightmares continue for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Having already lost ace Patrick Corbin to Tommy John surgery, now they've lost reliever David Hernandez as well. Toss in an 0-3 start to the season and there's not much to be happy about in Arizona. PHOENIX -- Amid the pageantry and excitement of Opening Day at Chase Field on Monday, it was easy to forget the Diamondbacks' season already began more than a week earlier.
But even if the D-backs' two losses to the Dodgers in the Opening Series in Australia marked the official start of their year, Monday felt like the season's true beginning. And as with every Opening Day, optimism...

PHOENIX (AP) Arizona Diamondbacks setup man David Hernandez thought it was just normal elbow soreness.
Another one bites the dust. The Arizona Diamondbacks have tied Atlanta for the most Tommy John surgeries coming out of Spring Training. Not something you want to be at the top of. After losing ace Patrick Corbin for the entire season, David Hernandez has now torn his UCL and appears to be headed in the same direction. Ken Rosenthal tweets: If second MRI confirms torn UCL...

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- For most major leaguers with more than four years of service time, a demotion to Triple-A would come as an indignity, a career setback.
For Diamondbacks reliever David Hernandez last season, though, it was a welcome change.
"My reaction? Relief," Hernandez said. "Most people are upset, not happy. For me, it was just like I had the weight lifted off my shoulders...
