Dmitri Young, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Other Players to Look At
I thought that the Pittsburgh Pirates had hit rock bottom when they signed Clint Barmes to a two year, $10.5 million deal this offseason. He is coming off a year in which he hit .244, only played 123 games, hit 12 HR’s and stole 3 bases, and struck out more than twice as often as he walked. Aside from an uncharacteristic season in 2008 in which he hit .290, the 33 year old...

Dmitri Young to work out for Pirates
tweeted:
Dmitri Young (nicknamed “Da Meat Hook”) hasn’t played since 2008 and has had some serious weight and health issues in the past. But now, the 38-year old has slimmed down big-time and is looking to make a comeback. ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick wrote a good piece about Young’s efforts to make it back to the bigs, and it includes this awesome quote that...

Ryan Zimmerman: First Baseman of the Future
The Washington Nationals have never had exactly what they wanted at first base since they arrived in DC. Nick Johnson was perpetually injured, Dmitri Young had a single incredible bounce back year, and Adam Dunn was a left fielder until the Nats made him go to first base to make room for Josh Willingham. Dunn was also terrible defensively. Michael Morse did a great job there...

Give This Man an Invite
Before last season I wrote a pair of columns (which I would link to but the site is down) looking at the more interesting non-roster invitees in every team’s Spring Training Camp. It might have been the most enjoyable column to research I wrote all year and I’ll be doing it again at around the time pitchers and catchers report for the 2012 season.

Dmitri Young explains his weight loss and comeback
This photo of Dmitri Young — taken by WTOP’s Craig Heist during this month’s winter meetings — got some online love from Nats fans, who continue to save a soft, mushy, flabby spot in their hearts for Da Meat Hook.
Young, you see, has lost 70 pounds and is looking to make a comeback in 2012.

Thursday Update from Winter Meetings
For Redlegs sake, someone please trade with Walt.
Things are not going the way Reds fans had hoped they would so far at the winter meetings. That doesn't necessarily mean nothing is going to happen, as there seems that there have been plenty of talks and there's lots of offseason yet to go. It's just really frustrating when it seems like the Reds have a top trade chip...

Dmitri Young Is All Skinny Now
Dmitri Young, our sixth-most blogged-about person of 2008, weighed in at 291 pounds once, the year after batting .320, and he’s looked pretty much the same ever since.
Here’s what Da Meathook is looking like now, though, (via Nats Enquirer):

Comeback trail: Dmitri Young latest to seek return in 2012
Don't call it a week for comebacks.
Well, actually, at the rate we're going maybe we should.
On Sunday, we learned of Manny Ramirez's plans to return to Major League Baseball. That announcement came just hours before the Winter Meetings officially kicked off. Now, several writers stationed at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas are reporting that 38-year-old Dmitri Young...

It's a magical night for ex-Nats on Twitter. First, a Dmitri Young/Robert Fick sighting.
And then Mike Bacsik delivers the goods on Twitter. I mean, come on, man. Jason Worth, Strausberg, and Zimmerman all in one Tweet? It's almost like he did it on purpose. Grooved one, even. Oh, wait...
