The Great Big 2012 Blue Jays Forecast Series, Part 6: Edwin Encarnacion

With spring training officially just under a month away, we continue with a series of projections on what the 2012 Toronto Blue Jays might look like. Each day (don’t hold me to this), I will profile a 2012 Blue Jays starter, closing with a set of numbers based on my (usually positive) expectations. Taking things (presumably) off the field, today’s subject of focus is the...

Jays plan to use Encarnacion as utility player

The Blue Jays plan to use Edwin Encarnacion all over the diamond next season. The infielder who mostly was the designated hitter for Toronto last season played 36 games at third base and 25 at first, along with 70 as the DH. General manager Alex Anthopoulous says the 28 year-old Encarnacion will add the outfield to his repertoire by playing left field in winter ball. The Blue...

Where the Jays Stand – Designated Hitter

Call it the Jays’ “steak or burger” position. The steak is David Ortiz, whose age, inflexibility, potential for injury and probable price tag make him a risky proposition as a free agent, but one whose boffo 2011 numbers might help convince suitors that it’s a risk worth taking. The burger is Edwin Encarnacion, a versatile, younger, inexpensive option who is already locked...

Blue Jays Break Out Home Run Bats, But Lose Close Slugfest To Pirates

Jo-Jo Reyes took the mound for the Blue Jays in their series opener against the Pirates tonight, and even though the righty has hidden his pitching ineptitude behind a little bit of bad luck over his starts this year, his 7th loss was all vintage Jo-Jo, as he was unable to make it out of the 4th inning in an otherwise thrilling slugfest that ended with the Blue Jays losing narrowly...

Which Middle of The Order Bat Should The Blue Jays Target?

It’s no surprise that Toronto is looking for another middle of the order bat to add to their lineup. Despite ranking 5th in the AL in runs scored, the Blue Jays are more than 100 runs behind the top 3 offenses in the league. Not only that, but in every high leverage spot Jose Bautista was pitched around, leaving inferior hitters like Adam Lind or Edwin Encarnacion with the...

Aaron Hill, Encarnacion Get First HRs; Blue Jays Crush White Sox

With the bullpen mostly depleted from last night’s ball game, the Blue Jays were surely looking forward to having Ricky Romero, a guy who could be expected to go fairly deep into the ball game, on the mound taking on John Danks and the White Sox. As it turns out, we probably could have sent Jo-Jo Reyes out on the mound on a bad day for 9 innings, and probably still come away...

Edwin Encarnacion’s 2012 Option

About three months ago, it sure seemed like it was time for the Blue Jays to give up on Edwin Encarnacion. He wasn’t hitting and he certainly couldn’t handle third base. At the beginning of June, he had a season line of .247/.270/.349 and given that he had committed eight errors in just 16 starts at third, it wasn’t enough. Since then, Encarnacion has been one of the...
