TRI Final Projections: Third Base

I’ll come right out and say it right now. Third base will be the most controversial of TRI’s projections yet. There are three names prominently missing from the final list. I certainly didn’t plan on that happening, but the formula does what it does. I’ll add that two of the three make perfect sense to me, but they fly in the face of conventional wisdom. So...

The Great Big 2012 Blue Jays Forecast Series, Part 6: Edwin Encarnacion

With spring training officially just under a month away, we continue with a series of projections on what the 2012 Toronto Blue Jays might look like. Each day (don’t hold me to this), I will profile a 2012 Blue Jays starter, closing with a set of numbers based on my (usually positive) expectations. Taking things (presumably) off the field, today’s subject of focus is the...

Fantasy Baseball – Bargains And Overrated Players At 3B

Position scarcity is an important concept to keep in mind, as getting an elite player at a shallow position can often make or break your season. A few years ago, we were always telling fantasy players to take a catcher or shortstop early in the draft, because after the first few players there was a significant drop off. This year, it’s third base that is one of the weakest...

10 Photos - Jays vs Rangers July 31/2011

Today's POTD features the game played on Roberto Alomar Hall of Fame Day at the Dome. Colby Rasmus takes a first inning pitch that Rangers catcher Taylor Teagarden tries to snare......but it glances off his glove. No one was on base at the time and Rasmus would eventually strike out to go 0-for-13 as a Blue Jays. However, things would get better for the former Cardinal on this...

Dealing with a Loss

The Tao of Stieb deals with the Blue Jays losing the Yu Darvish bidding. The 2012 Blue Jays were already an improvement over last year’s model. A full year with a focused Colby Rasmus, a bullpen that is a lot more settled than many of you give them credit for (Villaneuva-Perez-Litsch-Carreno-Janssen-Santos, with more to come), a full year with Edwin Encarnacion at DH (where...

Which Middle of The Order Bat Should The Blue Jays Target?

It’s no surprise that Toronto is looking for another middle of the order bat to add to their lineup. Despite ranking 5th in the AL in runs scored, the Blue Jays are more than 100 runs behind the top 3 offenses in the league. Not only that, but in every high leverage spot Jose Bautista was pitched around, leaving inferior hitters like Adam Lind or Edwin Encarnacion with the...

Winter Meetings Review: Toronto Blue Jays

The golden boy, Alex Anthoplous, didn’t make in ground shaking moves at the Winter Meetings, but he quietly made his team better. The Athletics and Mariners are finding out about how you survive in the same division is two heavyweights. Anthopolous (and Andrew Friedman) already have that experience. He flushed out the bad contracts and now is prepared to spend some money. So...

Where the Jays Stand – Designated Hitter

Call it the Jays’ “steak or burger” position. The steak is David Ortiz, whose age, inflexibility, potential for injury and probable price tag make him a risky proposition as a free agent, but one whose boffo 2011 numbers might help convince suitors that it’s a risk worth taking. The burger is Edwin Encarnacion, a versatile, younger, inexpensive option who is already locked...
