Rangers’ Washington Made Mistake Pinch Hitting German in World Series Game 1 Loss

“That’s the way baseball goes.” That phrase has been uttered by Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington a million times in his career. It was never more true or more painful than Wednesday night when the Rangers lost Game 1 of the World Series to the St. Louis Cardinals. Washington elected to pinch hit Esteban German instead of Yorvit Torrealba with two outs, two on and...

Mighty Joe Is A Ranger

Texas claimed UT JOE INGLETT off waivers. Not a bad pickup. At the plate, Inglett’s a lefthanded version of Esteban German, someone with good contact skills and patience but little power (safely ignore the short-sample, desert-fueled .516 slugging percentage he posted in Las Vegas). Unlike German, Inglett’s not eligible for arbitration, though their difference in salaries...

Rangers' aggression pays off in Game 2

He isn't a genius; that supposedly is the guy in the other dugout. He might never be celebrated by George Will, Bill James and other baseball intellects. Heck, he was the village idiot for using Esteban German as a pinch-hitter in Game 1 - a move that baffled most of us, but had Tony La Russa recalling German's days as a contact hitter with the Royals and thinking, "...
