Leadoff spot and implications for rest of Mariners lineup
You'd have to be illiterate to take an extended glance at the tea leaves and come away with the impression Ichiro will be batting leadoff to start the 2012 season. The Mariners have been dropping none-too-subtle hints for a while now about moving Ichiro out of his customary No. 1 role and the implications will be felt elsewhere in the lineup.
For instance, the decision will...

Your thoughts on Ichiro possibly batting 3rd this year?
The man! The myth. The legend. Ichiro Suzuki has been M's leadoff hitter for 1,722 games. We all know he shouldn't be any longer. (Most anyways) Wedge is dropping hints to anyone that will listen that Ichiro could be on his way out of the lead-off spot. Wedge said he hasn't decided yet who would hit first if Ichiro doesn't, nor where Ichiro would land in the batting order. But he...

Horse First, Then Cart
I’m a bit sleep deprived after a long week in Dallas, but I wanted to make one quick point before heading to bed. I know that the Angels decision to spend big on Pujols and Wilson has caused a lot of people to turn their attention back to the size of the Mariners payroll, and calls are getting louder for the team to spend more money in order to compete in the AL West. I&...

Mariners focused on Gutierrez's progress
Mariners manager Eric Wedge said the club is bringing outfielder Franklin Gutierrez, along with several other players, to Seattle in early January to make sure they're healthy and in top shape during offseason workouts. Wedge said reports are that Gutierrez is feeling well and has gained positive weight as he comes back from last year's stomach issue and late-season oblique pull.

Mariners linked to a number of 3B and pitching candidates
Not much going on yet as far as deals go here at the baseball winter meetings in Dallas, but the Mariners are laying the groundwork to get some deals done that do not involve Prince Fielder.
One of the areas the team would like to upgrade is third base. Wil Polidor, the agent for former Mariners infielder Carlos Guillen, told me he'll be meeting here with all interested parties...

Reaping What You Sow: Seattle Mariners Top 10 Prospects
With special thanks to Zach Sanders of FanGraphs for his input, I present to you the Seattle Mariners' Top 10.
This season didn’t exactly go very well for the Mariners. Having finished last in the AL West for the second straight season, the Mariners continue to look toward the future for hope because the present offers none. Fortunately, the minor leagues seem to be a legit...

Mariners signing of OF Darren Ford to minor league deal clears way to trade some outfielders
Had to get on a plane a short time ago, but just prior, I told you via Twitter that the Mariners had inked outfielder Darren Ford to a minor league contract. Ford is only 26 and steals a lot of bases while putting up good OBP and walk rates. Oh yeah, he can play center field as well, meaning that while he's strictly minor league depth for now, his presence -- he's been invited...

Mariners release former closer Aardsma
The Seattle Mariners released right-handed reliever David Aardsma after his refusal to be outrighted.
Aardsma missed the entire 2010 season after he had surgery in the offseason to repair a torn labrum in his hip. He then needed Tommy John surgery in July following an arm injury.
Aardsma notched 69 saves in two seasons with the Mariners, fourth-most in team history.
Seattle also...

Can the Mariners increase payroll without going to owners for more money?
One of the bigger questions to come out of our story on Mariners minority owner Chris Larson last week was whether the team can increase payroll without a capital call. In other words, could payroll go higher without Larson and other owners putting in more?
The short answer is yes. The detailed answer is far more complex.
As I've mentioned on my weekly KJR AM 950 "Talkin...

And Next Year’s Comeback Players are….
The Major League Baseball Comeback Player of the Year award has been interesting to me since it was conceived by MLB — and Viagra — in 2005. Certainly it’s not an award a player aspires to when beginning a career, but it can be quite an honor for someone who’s struggled but then overcome. In the award’s brief history, the winners have run the gamut....

The Byproduct of Aggressiveness
Over the weekend, the Mariners played four games against the Royals. The Royals pitching staff has the highest walk rate of any team in the American League. They also have the fifth lowest strikeout rate in the league, so overall, they’re just not very good.
The Mariners, in four games against that pitching staff, drew six walks and struck out 51 times. They struck out...

Mariners opt to not call any outfielders up today; going with Trayvon Robinson in CF and Mike Carp in LF
The Class AAA season ends today and the Mariners could have called up some additional outfielders now that they're shorthanded with the injury to Franklin Gutierrez and the temporary sidelining of Casper Wells after he was hit by a pitch yesterday.
But the M's have opted not to bring up reinforcements just yet.
Instead, they'll ride out tonight's game with Mike Carp...
