Epic 9th inning collapse
The St. Louis Cardinals epic 9th inning collapse yesterday against the New York Mets was reminiscent of this marvelous display of ineptitude 13 years ago today in Milwaukee.
On September 23, 1998 the Chicago Cubs led the Milwaukee Brewers 7-5 in the bottom of the 9th inning with two outs and two strikes nearly costing them their season.
This game had everything. Historic Home Runs...

Chris Davis strikes out five times, almost makes history with six
Had he recorded one more strike on Wednesday afternoon, Chris Davis would have joined one of the most exclusive groups in baseball history.
But it wasn't to be.
Since 1919, only seven players have struck out six times in a game: Geoff Jenkins (2004), Alex Gonzalez (1998), Sam Horn (1991), Cecil Cooper (1974), Billy Cowan (1971), Rick Reichardt (1966) and Don Hoak (1956).

Who Could Be Released This Month?
With certain contracts, there comes a time when a team would prefer to pay the player to go away and free up a roster spot. For example, two years ago the Tigers ate $14MM in releasing Gary Sheffield and the Phillies assumed $8MM to let Geoff Jenkins go. Here's a look at some big money players who I think stand a chance of being cut this month.
Oliver Perez, Mets:...

Flyers Skating With That Swagger
from Sam Donnellon of the Philadelphia Daily News,
But you win championships not only because of what your stars do, but because you get big moments from guys like Matt Stairs and Geoff Jenkins and Jamie Moyer.
The Flyers do not have one player among the top 20 scorers. Three of them though are among the NHL’s top dozen in plus-minus. And when James van Riemsdyk banged...

Revisiting the WFC of 2008
2 years ago Phillies fans woke up on October 30th and were World Champions. For Phillies, It's Been Werth the Wait
by Andrew JohnsonFiled under: Phillies, MLB Playoffs, National League Division SeriesIt's hard not to notice Jayson Werth, looking back at the last four years -- division championships in each season for the Philadelphia Phillies, NL pennants in the last two, a World Series title in 2008.
And not just because of his Grizzly Adams sense of style.
His name pops up at almost an...

Sam Horn, Employee No. Awesome
Sam Horn, 1993 PinnacleSam Horn was a popular player during his days in Boston, and has gained somewhat of a cult following these days as a Red Sox post-game show analyst. Horn’s home run catch-phrase is “ka-pow,” so I am unsure if his loyal following is sincere or ironic. Nevertheless, once upon a time Sam Horn played for the Baltimore Orioles. We know now that Sam Horn...
