A Royal Blue Island In A Sea of Cardinal Red
I live 149 miles from Kauffman Stadium, but I’m not in Royals territory. I’m a Royals fan in the suburbs of Cardinal Nation, otherwise known as Southwest Missouri. Actually, I’m a fan of two baseball teams. The Kansas City Royals and whoever is playing the St. Louis Cardinals.
You’re in the minority when you’re a Royals fan in Southwest Missouri. Whenever I confess I...

Sanchez trade is right move for the moment
Jonathan Sanchez is the best starting pitcher the Royals have acquired since Gil Meche, and this is both the best and worst part of what probably will be their biggest offseason addition. This is a happy day for the Royals. A promising day. But also one that loses a little shine with context.

Hochevar gets Royals opening day start — and a nickname
Cynics might say this falls into the category of "somebody had to go first" but the Kansas City Royals have announced their starting pitcher for opening day.
And that somebody ... is right-hander Luke Hochevar.
("Hochevar," in case you are curious, is pronounced as awkwardly as it is spelled: HOE-shay-vur.)
You also might assume Hochevar has inherited Zack Greinke...

Hope Springs Eternal (Again)
So spring training has started and hope springs eternal, right? This year the Royals are starting over, AGAIN. I dunno, how many rebuilding plans is this now since David Glass took over? I lost count long ago. This time the Royals are serious about rebuilding. The team has the youngest roster of all the 30 MLB teams in spring training. The roster is bulging with 65 players in camp...

Trusting the Process?
There’s certainly something to be said about developing a farm system that is the envy of baseball. It takes talent. It takes dedication. It takes all members of the organization to be on the same page, with almost everything they do, and to have a commitment to each other.
Apparently though, it also takes time, and lots of it.
With last week’s column there was a little bit a...

Five players who should give this season’s money back
Gerrard - not quite on the list
The Super Bowl was good last night, wasn’t it? All that stopping and starting and stuff - it was great. Anyway, after we’d finished supping our Bud and polishing off our chips and dip, The Spoiler got to thinking about another American sport - baseball.
More specifically, we got to thinking about the chaps who play Extreme Cricket. More...

Royals Flawed Off-Season Continues
Believe it or not, but over the last few weeks, Dayton Moore was on quite the hot streak. Within the span of four days, the Kansas City Royals made the Best Free Agent Signing Of The Winter, and gained $12 million after Gil Meche abruptly retired. That run of good fortune ended Thursday, as the Royals signed Pedro Feliz to a minor league contract. While it’s no guarantee that...

Gil Meche shocks the world!
During Superbowl week its easy for other sports stories to be overshadowed. I couldn't ignore this one. Gil Meche, 32-year-old pitcher for the Kansas City Royals has retired. He has walked away from a guaranteed $12.4 million dollars that was due to him for the last year of his contract. To put that into perspective, that's enough to buy 2.5 million five-dollar foot longs...

Nothing Noble About Meche’s Decision To Retire
OK, I did say Gil Meche’s decision to give up the final $12 million of his contract was “idiotic.” And maybe that was a little strong. But let’s not act like the owners of the Royals are going to donate the extra money to pay teachers or fight cancer. Hell, they already admitted they aren’t even going to add a player to the roster. [NY Daily News]...

Meche: 'I wasn't earning my money'
Gil Meche retired last week, telling the Royals' general manager, Dayton Moore, that he did not want any of the paycheck due him. No settlement, no buyout, no strings.

The Gil Meche Story
I was rambling around the Interwebs a few days ago and stumbled upon the innocuous news that Gil Meche, the Royals starter, was retiring. My first thought was “hey, wasn’t he the guy the Royals gave that big contract to a few years ago.” And indeed he was, but something else about the story caught my eye.
The Royals signed Meche to a wildly overpriced 5-year $55 million...

Gil Meche--We're Not Worthy
In this day and age it seems as though everyone has a sense of entitlement or is looking for a hand-out from somewhere. That’s why I found it incredibly refreshing to hear about a man who is so humble and honest about his own self-worth, that he is willing to turn down millions of dollars he was promised just because he doesn’t feel that he deserves it. Gil Meche, 32-year old...

Meche shuns greed, guilt for peace of mind
Greed can be a powerful persuader. So, too, can guilt. Gil Meche, clearly, does not possess the former. And he didn't want to experience the latter. His stunning decision to walk away from the $12.4 million owed to him by the Royals this year is

Say What!?: Baseball Player Walks Away From $12 Million
Let me start by saying that Gil Meche must be a better man than me. He’s getting praised for retiring from the MLB instead of making $12 million because he’s injured. He didn’t want the money because he didn’t feel he was going to earn it while on the disabled list. With that decision, he [...]
