A Brief E-mail Interview with Ian Laperriere
With all the concussions that are happening in the National Hockey League this year, I figured now would be a good time to do an e-mail interview with an NHLer who has had one and that is Ian Lapperriere.
Lapperriere has not played in the NHL since the 2009-10 season due to post-concussion syndrome. Ian was kind enough to take the time to tell us about how he got into hockey, how...

A blog from 39,000 feet
SOMEWHERE OVER THE MIDWEST – How cool is it to have wireless internet usage in an airplane? Pretty damn cool if you ask me. Just had to get a blog in while I’m up here. I even got the exit row on this flight from Detroit to Denver, and I got coffee and sparkling water on the open tray table next to the vacant seat beside me. Life is good – though I still can’...

Masterton Trophy Leader
The NHL award that has the poorest definition of what it is for is the Masterton Trophy. Officially it is given to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey. That is somewhat of a vague definition. In practise, it is an award given out for lifetime achievement in a rather random fashion. Last year it went to Ian...

Use of Visors mandatory?
Image via WikipediaThis is the latest argument that has come up, some want to make the use of visor mandatory in the NHL, the AHL visors are already mandatory. Me personally, I think it should be up to the individual player, if they don't want to wear the visor them it should be up to them.
Hockey News --- For most players, like sidelined Flyers forward Ian Laperriere, they...

Hockey fighting and the NHL mandatory visor debate
Mixing concerns about player safety with the quasi-legal assistance of fighting in the NHL is like putting marinara sauce on your Cheerios: Both have their virtues, but the combination is really hard to swallow.
We see it in the head-shot debate, as the NHL goes to great lengths to protect player's heads (because the brain is located inside the head, you see) while allowing ...

After Pronger injury, some Flyers stubbornly hold out on visors
By his own admission, Ian Laperriere was too macho to wear a visor. Then he took a Paul Martin slap shot to the face during the 2010 playoffs and suffered a brain contusion and concussion. He valiantly returned to the Philadelphia Flyers in the Stanley Cup Final, wearing a visor and vowing he'd wear one for the rest of his career.
That Ian Laperriere hasn't played another...

Tim Panaccio: Damaged Goods
The Flyers wanted to go at least past Jody Shelley's suspension before having to make some kind of move that might involve Ian Laperriere.
It's not often a player gets waived, picked up and then returned, but that's what happened on Sunday when the Canadiens told Blair Betts he was unwanted.
Because of injury. If you think this is embarrassing to the Habs and Flyers...

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer Musings: 10/3/11
The Flyers have the day off from practice today but will resume preparations for Thursday's regular season opener in Boston. Between today and Wednesday, the Flyers will have to make roster cuts and become compliant with the salary cap (with Matt Walker still in camp, they are currently over the cap, even with Ian Laperriere going on LTIR late this week).
Here's a look...

The Flyers are a team that perennially operate toward the very top of the NHL’s upper limit. Given the various complexities within the CBA, it can make for very confusing situations.

It is time for the hockey world to slowly start moving past the offseason from hell, although the memories of all those lost this summer will remain in everyone's minds. Around the NHL, teams (including the Flyers) start their rookie camps this week. Around Europe, regular seasons get underway. The KHL resumes today.
Even before the official start of Flyers' rookie camp...

Four Philadelphia Flyers With a Future in………Acting?
Most NHLers use the off season to unwind, spend time with family and perhaps go on a much needed vacation. Four members of the Philadelphia Flyers decided to try their hand at acting.
Ian Laperriere, Matt Carle, James van Riemsdyk and Scott Hartnell traveled to Los Angeles last month to shoot a scene for a new film by Judd Apatow. For those that don’t know, Apatow is behind...

Concussion Chatter

Concussions are one of the top problems that the NHL has been dealing with for almost two decades now. The topic continues to dominate league meetings and has spurned new rules on the ice, new medical rules about head injuries, and lots of new attempts to protect the players head with equipment like helmets and mouth guards. This past season we...

Lappy Goes Hollywood
From Dan Gross at Philly.com:
WHEN A Flyers official heard that “40-Year-Old Virgin” director Judd Apatow was looking for a hockey player with no teeth for his new movie, he knew just who to recommend: Ian Laperriere.
The injured winger jumped at the opportunity and enlisted teammates Scott Hartnell, Matt Carle and James van Riemsdyk to join him in Hollywood for a 16...

Judd Apatow sees Ian Laperriere, Flyers as comedy gold
Anyone that watched HBO's superlative "Broad Street Bullies" documentary witnessed the grand tradition of the Philadelphia Flyers mingling with fans as some South Jersey dive bar after games.
(A tradition that, with advent of cell phone cameras and social media, is probably D.O.A. in 2011.)
Director/comedy god Judd Apatow apparently understands that when you put the Flyers in a bar...

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: 7/20/11
The news that the Flyers will carry a $1,402,500 cap penalty this season due to bonus-related overages from last season throws a wrench into any semblance of salary cap breathing room that the team will bring into the 2011-12 season. The club now has a mere $175,258 in cap space (which includes the salary of LTIR candidate Ian Laperriere).
When Laperriere goes on LTIR, the team...
