Celtics waive Jamal Sampson, more cuts to come

Preseason, we hardly knew you. With three days to go before the season opener in New York, the Celtics began the process of trimming their roster down. The first casualty was camp invitee Jamal Sampson, who saw the floor for only the final two minutes of last night's preseason finale. That leaves Boston with 16 bodies and 15 open roster spots. However, the Celtics are only...

Finalizing the Celtics roster

The preseason concluded yesterday with a win over the Raptors but now the hard part comes for the coaching staff and management.  Deciding on the final roster spots, to complete a 15 man roster, is always a difficult decision to make.  Only 12 players get to dress for games, but teams can carry up to 15 players.  Typically teams opt to send players to the Developmental League...

Jamal Sampson waived by Boston Celtics

If the Celtics don’t keep Greg Stiemsma and cut Gilbert Brown and Michael Sweetney, I’ll strip naked and run seven laps around the TD Garden. And I promise, nobody wants that.

Your Morning Dump... Where Rondo's jumper looks better

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Not only was he knocking down jumpers, but he was pulling up for them without any hesitation - something he did not do nearly enough of last season. "We want him to just shoot it," said coach...

Celtics likely to leave one roster spot open for free agent acquisition

The Boston Celtics expect to keep one of their four training camp invites, leaving one roster spot open to add a late buyout or remaining free agent.“I don’t know [if the Celtics will carry 15 players], I would say most likely not,” said Rivers. “There are guys still out there, unsigned. And we might want to sign them.”Pressed on potentially signing a veteran, Rivers...

The Boston Celtics sign Jamal Sampson

The Celtics have signed 28-year old PF/C Jamal Sampson.  Sampson last played back in 2006-07 with the Denver Nuggets.  Sampson has played in 72 games (5 starts) in his first five years in the NBA and he is averaging 8.8 minutes, 2.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game.  You can’t teach size, so it doesn’t hurt to give Sampson a chance to show what he can do.

Training camp: Don't expect fun and games this year

The Celtics open training camp today in Waltham. Woo-hoo! There are very few specifics about the schedule, workouts and when the players will arrive. There was a lot of optimism surrounding the team last year. The roster was firm. We had Shaq and Nate Robinson playing practical jokes daily. There's a completely different feel this season. ESPN Boston's Chris Forsberg...

Celtics Invite 3 More Players to Camp

The Celtics have already announced their intention to invite Pitt's Gilbert Brown to camp.  Brown went undrafted but Danny called him right after the draft to let him know that the Celtics were still very interested in him and that he had a good chance to make the team.  Brown is a defensive specialist whose offensive game needs some work. In addition to Brown,  the Celtics...

Celtics bringing Sweetney back to camp again

SB Nation is reporting that Michael Sweetney, Jamal Sampson and Greg Stiemsma have been invited to Celtics training camp. This is the second go-round with Sweetney. He was a camp invitee back in 2009. I believe he spent the last few years playing in China. Sampson is a 6-11 big who has played for 5 NBA teams. He spent the last two years in the Philippines and China. Greg Stiemsma...
