The Tigers made a series of transactions today, as the first round of cuts began in major league camp. They unconditionally released one player who saw action with the big club in 2011 and 2012, and send eight other players to minor league camp.
The Tigers assigned the following players to minor league camp:
RHP Drew VerHagen
LHP Duane Below
LHP Robbie Ray
C James McCann
It was mostly quiet over the weekend in Lakeland, however, the catchers, including highly regarded prospect James McCann, got in some work in the field and at the plate. Plus, a quick update on the progress Justin Verlander is making in his rehab.
With a second left all California-San Diego could do is a catch and shoot. James McCann found Drew Dyer in the corner and Dyer hit the shot to win it for the Tritons 66-64 over Chico State"We really put ourselves in position to have a chance and we were fortunate to make some plays at the end. I'm really proud of our effort." UCSD head coach Eric Olen said.Dyer would...
The Detroit Tigers farm system once again ranks in the bottom tier headed into the 2014 season, with only one potential impact prospect and a host of probable late-innings arms.
Headlining the organization’s crop of young talent is Nick Castellanos, who reached the major leagues in late 2013 after a quick rise through the minors. A natural third baseman, the 21-year-old was moved...

Akron, OH – About the same time the Harrisburg Senators were wrapping up a 6-3 win over the Altoona Curve Tuesdaynight, Erie’s Wade Gaynor was making darn sure the SeaWolves didn’t lose any ground in the nip-and-tuck EL Western Division race.Gaynor lined an RBI base hit to center field in the top of the 10th inning, scoring James McCann who had doubled, to lift the SeaWolves...

Detroit Tigers prospect James McCann discusses his experience at the Arizona Fall League and more in this one-on-one interview.
As we move through the league, we see more and more teams that have used their farm system to go for it. That is one of the utilizations of a good farm system. The Tigers traded their best prospect and their best catching prospect (among others) for Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante. The idea was to get back to the ALCS and bust through the glass ceiling this time.
Tentative rosters for the Arizona Fall League were released on Aug. 29. The fall developmental league is designed to help prospects received extra seasoning and coaching at the conclusion of the minor league season. Each organization contributes players to the six-team league. The league typically shifts in favor of the hitters because teams are generally reluctant to assign top...
Shortly after one of the Rob Brantly was called up to Triple-A Toledo, James McCann got a call that he was being transferred from Class-A Lakeland up to Double-A Erie. Not only was McCann ecstatic with the news, but with Brantly now traded to the Marlins, McCann is the top catching prospect in the system and quickly approaching the big leagues.
In an organization that has a young All-Star in Alex Avila, plus top prospects like Rob Brantly and James McCann, it's easy to miss those other prospects that might be shining at the same position. Casali may not be getting the attention, but he's quietly making himself a big time prospect.
It’s prospect season again. I’ve had my rankings listed on team pages, but have been horrible about keeping those up to date. As I mentioned on the pages, I’m looking at other rankings when I make mine (along with scouting reports and my own opinion). The Tigers are up.
For the top 20, I’ve listed them according to my ranking. I’ve also listed the rankings of other sites...
The Tigers top selection in the 2011 draft, James McCann had a relatively quiet start to his pro career, appearing in just 14 games after signing. What about the young backstop made the Tigers so eager to snag him, despite a young All-Star catcher and a top prospect just in front of him?
