Padres go for series wins against Cubs

Two well-pitched games have resulted in a split in this series between the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres. There won't be a low-scoring game in Thursday night's finale if San Diego's Odrisamer Despaigne turns in a start similar to his last two. The Padres starter has nowhere to go but up after getting ripped for 15 runs over his last two outings heading into his first career start...

Series Preview: Chicago Cubs (21-16) at San Diego Padres (19-20)

The Cubs face the Padres for the second (and presumably final) time this year. It’s a west coast roadtrip, one of the few times I’m glad that I don’t live in the greatest time zone. I should be able to catch all of these games, or at least fall asleep on the couch around the eight innings or so. Or drive to see some of them in person Team leaders Current and projected listed...

Cubs' Hammel supports Dolphins' signing

Cubs pitcher Jason Hammel is apparantly a Dolphins fan and was a huge fan of the team signing Ryan Tannehill to a contract extension through the 2020 season. Hammel grew up in Washington so it's not clear where his fandom for the Dolphins developed, but he was drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 2002 draft so perhaps it developed during his time in Florida.

Daily DraftKings Picks: Friday, May 15

Sorry for yesterday’s unpublicized absence — I was pretty under the weather. Before we get to Friday’s lineup, let’s check in on Wednesday’s team. Well, the offense was awesome with two 20-point players and four more batters tallying 9-14 points, but Francisco Liriano was disappointing and Jimmy Nelson got roughed up by the long ball in the first inning. Most of my lineups...

Cubs 2, Mets 1 (5/13/2015)

OSS: Hammel matches Harvey, and Coghlan walks it off, literally. Three Up 1. Jason Hammel, ladies and gentlemen!!! He matched Harvey pretty much pitch-for-pitch, allowing 8 baserunners over 8 innings. He left with a 1-0 deficit and so would have earned the loss. What a ****** stat. The Cubs made up the run in the 8th and won in the 9th. 2. Miguel Montero has been the best off-season...

Cubs confidence is paying dividends

If a confident team is truly the most dangerous type of team then the Cubs are getting more and more dangerous by the day. "Everybody exudes confidence right now," Jason Hammel told Cubs.com. "Somebody will get it done, and I think that's what everybody believes." A season ago the Cubs were 0-79 when trailing in the ninth, but in 2015 they've already six games in their final at-bat...

Prospect Watch: Cubs’ Billy McKinney

Supremely talented prospects are usually quite hard to find. Sometimes teams get lucky and have a few at the same time either at the Big League level, down on the farm, or perhaps even both. Other times, like in this particular case, a team like the Chicago Cubs gain multiple prospects in one seemingly average trade which ended up setting the table for years to come. The prospect...

Cubs 7, Brewers 6 (5/8/15)

OSS: Pile of home runs just barely shores up a shaky bullpen Three up 1. The aforementioned HR, by Fowler, Rizzo, Soler, and Castro. IIRC all of them that had an upper deck in their way landed there. 2. Jason Hammel was solid going seven innings and striking out eight, allowing two runs. He probably could have come out for the eighth inning, but I don’t have a beef with Maddon...

DraftKings – Too Hot To Hammel

Ladies and gents, boys and girls, gasses and minerals, can we be serious for a moment? I have something that's touched us all in one way or another to discuss; the cold streak. Yes they happen to DFS gods such as myself too. Hard to believe I know, but it's true. Since last Sunday's post my wins have been few and far between. The worst part about all this is I'm not getting blown...

Preview: Brewers vs. Cubs

Although their young lineup has fallen on difficult times, the Chicago Cubs won't need a big day offensively if Jason Hammel can build on his best outing of the season. The right-hander looks to continue his dominance of the league-worst Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday and help the Cubs avoid losing consecutive home games for the first time. Since hitting .289 with runners in scoring...

Brewers 6, Cubs 1 (5/2/15)

OSS: Cubs strike out 18 times on the way to a loss Three up: 1. Aside from a Braun HR in the first (and another near-HR his next time up), I thought Arrieta looked pretty good in this game. Just all the bad luck you can think of in the second, with a bunch of bloops and meh contact finding holes for hits. In his not-defense though, the Brewers were running wild on him as he had no...

Series Preview: Milwaukee Brewers (5-17) vs Chicago Cubs (12-8)

It’s been just kind of a rough start to the year for the Brewers. If the Gambler’s Fallacy were actually true we could all have seen this coming, but alas. They have the worst run differential in the league, both due to bad pitching (pats self on back for this prediction), and untimely hitting. Adam Lind is the only position player who has put up numbers that are significantly...

Chicago Cubs: Hammel time

If someone were to ask you: which starting pitcher the Chicago Cubs signed this offseason will have the best season? 99.9% of Cubs fans would say Jon Lester. So far though, Jason Hammel is having a better year than Lester. That is not to say Hammel will have a better year than Lester or vice versa, but so far Hammel has been the man. After another shutout performance against the...

So far, Cubs living up to the hype

So far, so good. There is a lot of baseball left to be played, but if the first month is any indication, the Cubs are going to be playing meaningful baseball games late into the season. Prior to the 2015 season, there was a lot of hype and a lot of talk about the Cubs, but it was merely that, hype. Now the team has started to back up that talk with on-field results. “We know...

Cubs 4, Pirates 0 (4/27/15)

OSS: Jason Hammel had good stuff and the Cubs cruised to an easy 4-0 victory Three up: 1. Once the Cubs took the lead it felt like this game was in hand, as the Pirates had no answer for Jason Hammel. He finished with a line of 8 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K and was hitting his spots all game. JD pointed out that his stuff would have looked just as good on a warm day in July. 2. Rizzo...

Bryant, Hammel, Cubs beat Pirates; fan injured by flying bat

CHICAGO (AP) Kris Bryant drove in two runs, Jason Hammel threw eight scoreless innings and the Chicago Cubs beat Pittsburgh 4-0 Monday night, ending the Pirates' five-game winning streak. Bryant got two hits, including a two-run single, as the Cubs won their third in a row. The prized rookie has nine RBIs in 10 games since being called up from the minors. Hammel (2-1) gave up four...

The Pirates lost, and it was boring

Not much to really say about a game like this one. The Pirates played poorly all-around and were never really in it. It stinks to watch, especially in a division game, but over 162, games like that will happen. It’s the second one of the year by my count (the first being the lone loss to the Brewers).  The fact that they went in on a five game win streak makes it a little easier...

Pirates 4, Cubs 3 (4/22/15)

OSS: Cubs leave everyone on base, fail to bail out pedestrian Hammel. Three Up 1. Bryant doubled and walked, scoring twice. However, he also recorded an out AT CENTERFIELD. I actually kind of thought we’d see him at center at some point in his career (there are a few teams right now that would be trying him at center full-time, and he played the position in high school and a little...
