Anna Benson Tries to Trick Kris into Knocking her Up... This Show is Stupid

You'd think being obsessed with baseball and a fan of reality tv gems such as Bad Girls Club (gotta love watching drunk chicks pull each other's weaves out) would indicate that I also enjoy watching Baseball Wives. Think again. I had never watched the show up until Wednesday when my curiosity got the best of me. Since I can't get that 60 minutes of my life back, I figure I might...

Re-Casting Baseball Wives to Make it Actually Watchable

If you didn't catch the series premier of Baseball Wives last night, consider yourself blessed. Me, I wasn't so lucky as I was tasked by our crack editorial staff with watching the show and reviewing it. Here is my basic take: I watched the first 30 minutes of the show and then got up from my chair punched myself in the groin and writhed on the floor in agony for 30 minutes. That...

Chantel Kendall and Anna Benson drive ‘Baseball Wives’

The last time she checked, Chantel Kendall said, Major League Baseball players had an "85 percent" divorce rate. Her own bitter divorce to Jason Kendall — a major league catcher for 16 seasons, most recently with the Kansas City Royals — was finalized this past fall. Does divorce mean she's kicked out of the often close-knit inner circle of baseball spouses? And...

Baseball Wives Debuting November 30th on VH1 with Anna Benson as the Star

I am really curious to see if they are able to pull this off with Baseball Wives. To be blunt the reason Basketball Wives works is because it has a HOOD element to it.  Those ghetto fabulous type of interactions is what keeps the audience engaged. Stiletto Jill breaks down the cast members. The Baseball Wives cast is,  Tanya Grace (ex-wife of retired Chicago’s Mark Grace), Brooke...

Doctoring The Numbers: Starting Them Young, Part Two by Rany Jazayerli

Yesterday’s column made the claim that small differences in age among high school hitters can have a dramatic impact on their return as draft picks. Today, I intend to prove that claim. Rather than simply looking at the youngest and oldest players in each draft year, I’ve taken all 846 players in the draft study and separated them by age into five roughly equal bins: Very Young...

Judging the Royals | The hardest inning in baseball

In my never ending quest to get fans to pay attention to the seemingly routine things that win ball games when done well and lose them when done poorly, let us turn our attention to Louis Coleman. So, why Louis Coleman? Well, Jason Kendall recently told me that the hardest inning to get through is the 7th.

Perhaps this will cheer Pirate fans up

If you're in a Pirate-related funk today (and if you're a Pirate fan, you are), then perhaps you'll enjoy Chris Jaffe's look back on the career of Matt Stairs, one of my favorite three true outcomes players of all time, for the Hardball Times. Well, except the Pirate portion of his career isn't terribly cheery: Aug. 20, 2003: For the second time in his career...

Why Can't Most Catchers Hit?

Why are so many catchers in baseball so useless with the bat? A staggering 314 catching seasons of 100 plate appearances or more have occurred in the last ten years with a catcher having an OPS+ of 80 or less. That's an average of one per team for every season in the last ten years (30 teams times ten seasons). For comparison, 174 such seasons have occurred for shortstops, a...

A lone memory of meaningful baseball in Pittsburgh

It was mid-September and a light rain was in the Pittsburgh air. As we had done countless times before, my dad and I got into the car and headed down to Three Rivers Stadium. The Astros were in town, and there was baseball to be played. That was not exactly an unusual occurrence, but things were different on this night. After four straight seasons spent as an afterthought, the...
