Twins sign 2005 No. 3 overall pick to minor league deal

MINNEAPOLIS The Minnesota Twins signed infielder Jeff Clement, a former No. 3 overall pick, to a minor league contract Monday. The contract includes an invite to major league spring training. Clement, 29, was the third overall pick in the 2005 draft when the Seattle Mariners took him after Justin Upton and Alex Gordon. But since then, Clement has played in just 152 major league...

Roster Watch: Jeff Clement

This one should be easy as the Pirates already made the right decision with Jeff Clement. Clement has been a flop at the major league level.  Not that the Pirates gave up much for him. Really have to think the Pirates made out in that deal just by acquiring Ronny Cedeno.  Clement was a longshot [...]

Pirates Outright Daniel McCutchen, Jeff Clement, and Eric Fryer

The Pittsburgh Pirates have outrighted Daniel McCutchen, Jeff Clement, and Eric Fryer to Triple-A Indianapolis. This is the first we’ve heard that McCutchen was removed from the 40-man roster. Fryer has already elected free agency...

Pirates claim Chad Beck and Ali Solis

The Pirates claimed pitcher Chad Beck and catcher Ali Solis off waivers on Thursday. Jeff Clement and Eric Fryer were designated for assignment to make room for Beck and Solis on the 40-man roster. Obviously, these are pretty minuscule moves in the grand scheme of things, but I’ll briefly break them down anyway. Beck is a 27 year old reliever that was recently DFA by the Blue...

Cubs edge Bucs

The Pirates weren’t a sloppy embarrassment on Saturday night like they were on Friday, but they were outpitched and dropped a 4-3 battle to lose this weekend’s series against the lowly Cubs. James McDonald wasn’t too bad. He wasn’t good, but he at least managed to hold things together and not throw the game away. The Cubs put up a run in the second, third, and fifth innings...

First Pitch: Five Other Altoona Players Who Could Help Indianapolis

The Indianapolis Indians clinched the playoffs a while ago, and next week they will start their post-season run. The only problem is that their playoff-bound roster will be raided when rosters expand in September. That’s not a problem. The purpose of a minor league system is to provide players for the big league clubs. Development and providing the big league club with help are...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Milwaukee Brewers – Game 126

Whattaya know?  The Pirates losing to the Brewers?  Other contenders making moves while the Pirates are calling up guys like Jeff Clement. A lot of roster moves and the Brewers

The Pirates were pretty busy for a Friday afternoon in August today; they sent Daniel McCutchen back down to Triple-A and brought Jordy Mercer back from paternity leave (this brings the roster back to 13 position players and 12 pitchers, which makes sense given that the Pirates were both off yesterday and will be off again next Thursday), they sent Yamaico Navarro down to Triple...

Pirates call up Jeff Clement

The Pirates have called up Jeff Clement from Triple-A Indianapolis and swapped Yamaico Navarro to Indy to clear his spot. Clement will be back in the majors for the first time since 2010. This isn’t a very big move by any means; just a bench swap. Clement provides some power from the left side, and has had a pretty solid and consistent season in Indianapolis. He hit 16 homers with...
