Best season ever on baseball horizon?
Football season is over, and I could not be happier.
Dont get me wrong. I like football. Super Sunday is an unofficial national holiday. But I get more excited about the next one: Baseball Monday.
If Memorial Day represents the start of summer, and Labor Day the start of autumn, then Baseball Monday begins a countdown to the popping of catchers mitts.

Juan Pierre, Domonic Brown, and plans
Last week, the Phillies signed Juan Pierre to a minor-league contract. Pierre’s most likely role with the club is as the fifth or sixth outfielder. His primary duty might be to pinch run when Jim Thome reaches base in the late innings. Once Ryan Howard returns from his Achilles injury—projected sometime in May—Pierre may be designated for assignment.

Manuel Has Plans For Thome
This off-season the Phillies improved their offense quite a bit by adding multiple free agent reserve types. One of those acquisitions, Jim Thome, is a familiar face that made the man who is in charge of the team each game day extremely pleased.Phils’ manager Charlie Manuel knows what Jim Thome can do and looks forward to the type of contributions Thome will make on and off...

A look at the Phillies off-season...
The Phillies ended the 2011 season by winning the NL East crown and then were up set in the NLDS by the Cards. On one hand I have to give the Phillies credit since this championship run started they have been very aggressive in the market acquiring players through trade and free agency. I could only have wished the Mets would have acted in the same manor back in 2006, instead the...

Jim Thome Has A Job Waiting For Him With The White Sox
In an interview with Comcast SportsNet, White Sox chairman said that Thome basically has a job waiting for him with the organization when he retires.
"When he left here to go to the Twins (in 2010), we kind of shook hands and agreed that, whenever his career is over, he’ll come back to the White Sox in some capacity," Reinsdorf said. "He did say that he wants to...

Recapping the Phillies’ off-season, and a 1st crack at the 25-man roster
Apologies for the severe lack of posts – lots of non-blog related life events going on recently.
This is about the time of year I forget about everything that happened to the Phillies in 2011 and start getting really excited for 2012. Since I haven’t been able to examine each move individually, I figured I’d do an overview of all the moves they’ve made now...

JUAN for the Money…25 for the Show…
Well, the Phillies first move of the offseason was a huge splash – signing Jonathan Papelbon to the tune of $50 M/4 years. Ever since then there have been a succession of more obscure, lesser marquee names inking deals (Jim Thome, Dontrelle Willis, Ty Wiggington, Lance Nix). Philadelphia’s real Dream Team seems to be taking shape and will debut in the shadows of the failed Eagles...

Some recent news…
This past Friday, Jim Thome announced that he was doing what he could do, physically, to get himself ready to occasionally play first base (expected to be at least once a week) both before and after Ryan Howard returns, although during the season the Phils will be using him mainly as a late-innings pinch-hitting threat, like they did with Matt Stairs in late 2008 and 2009. Although...

Windhorst: Before it’s All Over, LeBron Will Play for Cleveland
I’m not saying it’s happening in 2014, but before it’s all over, LeBron [James] will play [for] Cleveland. He will get a statue; they just built a statue for Jim Thome and he stiffed Cleveland just as much as LeBron. In the end, he goes back to the Cavs and he’s remembered as a great player and not as a villain. I might be proven wrong, but that’s my...

Number 2,500
We Americans are a funny and stubborn people. We have this abject fascination with multiples of five or ten. That's why we fly in the face of world pressure to move to the metric system. It's also why it would take a major shift in our belief systems to move away from the dollar and go to some other form of world money. The love of fives and tens probably comes from our monetary...

Pressing Questions: The Minnesota Twins
John Sorbi, an old buddy of mine, visited a number of baseball stadiums during a cross-country jaunt in the summer of 1995. He was still jaded by the strike in those days, but he didn't let that get in the way of exploring baseball history. When Jonas walked into Tiger Stadium on a summer day in '95, he carried a simple sign to get his point across:

Quick Fire: Love/Hate in Philly
Yesterday, MLB Trade Rumors passed along some links that helped answer some questions regarding the lineup the Phillies plan to use to start to season.
Fantasy flirt, Ty Wigginton, will start the season as the Phillies everyday first baseman (though Jim Thome might get a start here or there). This is great news for fantasy owners looking to find lightning in a bottle late on draft...
