Sherman: Rays Could Trade Pitching For Joey Votto
Joel Sherman of Newsday writes (via Twitter) that the Rays are not too anxious to trade any of their starting pitching depth. But notes that their stance “would change if [Joey] Votto became available.” He also notes that the Rays are “concentrating” on adding a first baseman, a designated hitter, and two relievers.
The Votto news is certainly enticing. However...

Still, Still!
So close to a Yankee loss and an us win. But close only counts in horseshoes and lemonade. Instead they win by one and we lose by one.I don't even know where to start with that Fox coverage. On one fly ball they showed the wrong fielder. Ball caught completely off-screen. In a huge spot. And each announcer capped off his day nicely in the final inning--that Max V. guy acting...

Joey Gathright, Jose Iglesias Among Five Additional September Call-Ups for Red Sox
Coming off a 1-6 road trip, it sure felt as if the Red Sox could use some help. Plenty of it arrived Tuesday with the addition of five more September call-ups, although don't expect many major impacts from every member of the quintet. Outfielder Joey Gathright, shortstop Jose Iglesias, first baseman Lars Anderson, right-handed reliever Junichi Tazawa and left-handed reliever...

Grit, speed help Gathright return to BoSox
The Red Sox were looking for a player who could steal a base. They found him in Yuma, Ariz., at the end of his independent league season, on a 115-degree day.
With his agent throwing him batting practice, no less.
Outfielder Joey Gathright, signed to a minor league contract Aug. 31, will rejoin the Red Sox on Tuesday night. His last appearance in the majors was with the Sox in...

By all means, play the David Bowie song. No, not 'Quicksand'.
Did you know that Matt Sheely was released several days ago? No, you did not, and that is because you are unthinking and unfeeling. He seemed like a nice kid, very well-dressed also. Looks like Ryan Khoury's back with Pawtucket. And here I thought the gaping hole at McCoy was the result of Paul Hoover's departure. Speaking of catchers, Dan Butler is back. But not John Otness...

Video: Kurt Suzuki does the old 'jumping out of a pool' trick
Viral videos of athletes jumping out of pools are nothing new. Jarron Gilbert, a 6-foot-5-, 300-pound defensive lineman, burned up the Internet a few years ago, as did ultimate fighter B.J. Penn, who only stands 5-foot-9. Plenty of copycats have popped up on YouTube since. To my recollection, though, we haven't seen a baseball player getting his H20 hops on — the closest...

Keeping it in the Infield
On a list of the highest single season infield hit totals since FanGraphs began tracking the statistic in 2002, Ichiro Suzuki occupies the first seven spots. Across all seasons, Ichiro’s 391 infield hits totally dwarfs every other hitter in baseball. The next highest is Luis Castillo with 248. By sole dint of his impressive cumulative total, it is tempting to award Ichiro as the...

Flanny's Take: Dreaming of Dyson and on-base percentages
By Jeffrey Flanagan
FOXSportsKansasCity.com
It's not like the Royals have not seen speed in the last 20 years. There was Tom Goodwin for awhile in the 1990s. There was Joey Gathright a few years back.
There was even Scott Podsednik for a bit this season.
But not like this. Not like Jarrod Dyson, the Royals rookie center fielder, whose blazing speed may just have many Royals fans...

#11: Car Jumping With Joey
This is another of my favorite YouTube clips, which I featured on this blog a couple of years ago. It is of Joey Gathright, one-time Red Sox outfielder (who has also been with the Rays, Orioles and Royals, among others) who made this video when he was back in the minors in 2002.It is an amazing jump clean over the top of a car, and he does it twice. You have to see this to believe...
