With less than a week until pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report for spring training, several Red Sox players have already touched down in Fort Myers. Included in that group is team ace Jon Lester, who arrived early to get a head start on his workouts. On Monday, Lester tweeted a "pretty awesome" picture of the Sox' brand new JetBlue Park. Check it out below...

Spring Training hasn't even started, but the Globe's Peter Abraham has a report on the Sox who have showed up early to JetBlue Park, including Adrian Gonzalez, Jon Lester (who posted on Twitter the image you see to the right, Daniel Bard, and Daisuke Matsuzaka.

And so it begins
A few Sox have headed down to Florida early to get a jump-start on Spring Training.
The Globe's Pete Abe is in sunny Ft. Myers with the info:
There are 15 players or so on the field stretching before a workout. The group includes Jon Lester, Daisuke Matsuzaka (who has sort of orange hair), Andrew Miller, Rich Hill and Nate Spears.

In 10 days, Red Sox pitchers and catchers will report to spring training. With a chance to get an early start, Jon Lester, Andrew Bailey and Andrew Miller, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ryan Lavarnway are reportedly among players already in Fort Myers. One way or the other, David Ortiz will join the group soon. With his arbitration hearing slated for Monday, the Red Sox will aggressively...

Lester a fast starter
Jon Lester has always been considered among the accountable ones on the Red Sox. Though he was named as one of the fried chicken-and-beer trio, Lester was among the first players to address the situation back in October. And now he is in camp, working hard, looking lean, and excited about the coming season.

Red Sox Need to Sign Roy Oswalt to Maintain Chances for World Series
Does new Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington know something that the rest of us don’t? Or is this just a new, frugal version of the Red Sox? Something seems amiss in Beantown considering how quiet the franchise has been in free agency this offseason and with an apparent gaping need for starting pitching behind the Big 3 of Josh Beckett, Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz. Pitchers...

EXTRA IN YOUR Ledger - RED SOX;Boston's pitching is behind 8-ball
Fifth in an occasional series examining the Red Sox as they head into spring training. Today: the starting rotation.
Red Sox owner John Henry was musing about pitching a while back when he noted that the position isn't an exact science.
"Have you noticed how inconsistent pitchers are in general?" he asked. "It's really hard to predict."
Never was that...

#19: Is Jon Lester an elite starting pitcher?
Lester’s numbers from 2011 were down, but even before then, his best season was in 2010 when he was 19-9 with 225 strikeouts, a 3.25 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and .220 OBA. Those numbers weren’t even top-five worthy for 2011, so thinking that he could finish as a top five starting pitcher in 2012 just might be a pipe dream.
Here are Lester’s stats for the last four years:

Your Morning Dump... Where Beckett doesn't get it
Every morning we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump...
Josh Beckett has broken his silence.
Nearly two weeks before Red Sox pitchers and catchers must report to Fort Myers, Beckett made his first public comments about the team’s historic September collapse...

Boston Unlikely to Add Starter
According to Alex Speier, the Red Sox are unlikely to add another starting pitcher before the season begins. The Red Sox have been linked to both Edwin Jackson and Roy Oswalt in recent weeks, but neither player currently sees Boston as their landing spot. Jackson allegedly has better offers elsewhere, and it’s been widely speculated that Oswalt wants to pitch close to home...

Revisiting The Jon Lester Jordan Zimmermann Comparison
Last December I wrote a piece comparing the striking similarity to Jordan Zimmermann and Jon Lester's career paths. While Lester is a lefty (Zimmermann is a righty), and Zimmermann is one year older than the Red Sox hurler, the two both have similar approaches to the game, and both were forced to regain their prospect status after a major medical set back.
This is the comparison...

2012 Fantasy Baseball Boston Red Sox Starting Rotation Preview
Jon Lester (credits below) The 2012 Red Sox starting rotation is full of question marks and will most likely be undecided until late into spring training in March. If Clay Buchholz can remain healthy and the back end shapes up with Aaron Cook, Andrew Miller and a healthy Dice K, this staff could have plenty of sleeper potential. Keep an eye on the Red Sox situation this spring as...

Scattered Weekend Thoughts
I'm moving this weekend, but I'll try to check in on this. Comments welcome. If Roy Oswalt decides to sign with the Sox, tell him I'm a big fan!I'm optimistic about Nick Punto. I like the idea of defense coming first at short.I feel like Edwin Jackson is coming here, and that he'll be good. Just gut feelings in both cases. If Adrian Gonzalez is healthy, he'll have a huge year.David...

Nationals Tie Knot With Gio Gonzalez
The Nationals have not been shy about their dealings with Gio Gonzalez. First, they dealt three of their top 10 prospects — including two of their top three — for the 26-year-old hurler. Then, over the weekend, the Nationals completed the bond, signing the lefty to a contract extension worth $42 million over the next five years. The contract also includes two club options...

How Desperate Are The Boston Red Sox?
After a 2011 season that saw ten different pitchers get MLB starts, the Boston Red Sox are going down a different route in 2011.
None of Boston's starters thew over 200 innings, with just two, Josh Beckett and Jon Lester, qualified for the ERA title. Three of Boston's six starters who started double digit games, Tim Wakefield, John Lackey and Andrew Miller, had ERAs over 5.00...

Red Sox Fans Keeping Warm This Winter With Thoughts of Starting Rotation
The end of the Red Sox' season left most fans feeling cold in October. As the temperatures dip below freezing this January, that feeling's only going to get worse ... unless you think happy thoughts. The idea of Josh Beckett, Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz pitching three out of five nights is certainly one of them, and it can help cure those winter blues, as shown in the cartoon above.

Who's available to start?
Free Agency is dwindling down and the Red Sox still have some holes to fill up, specifically their starting pitching. Usually the Sox would boast about the depth they have in their rotation and as of right now, the Sox have two and a half pitchers that are definites in Jon Lester, Josh Beckett, and Clay Buchholz. John Lackey and Dice-K both have bum elbows and will not be a part...

Red Sox May Want to Add Starting Pitching Depth Now, But Patient Approach Makes Perfect Sense
Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said on Tuesday that he'll continue to look at pitching options as the team prepares for the 2012 season. And given the hurlers available on the open market and the cost at which they come, it's best if the Sox continue to play the waiting game. It might not be an overly popular decision amongst Red Sox Nation, but no starter available...
