Joni Pitkanen missed all of last season recovering from a severely broken heel, and it doesn’t sound as though the recuperation process has advanced much. In a brief interview with Finnish news outlet Kaleva, Pitkanen said he’s a “long way” from returning to play, noting that the injury hasn’t shown much improvement and he also hasn’t resumed skating.

Hurricanes: Three blueline targets before trade deadline

In many ways this season, the Hurricanes have never recovered from the loss of top defenseman Joni Pitkanen, whose ankle injury was deemed season-ending back in September. Defenseman Andrej Sekera, acquired at the NHL Draft last June, has been one of Carolina's best players; and 21-year-old Justin Faulk has a bright present and excellent future as a top blueliner. But there&...

Hybrid icing approved for use

In case you missed it, the NHL and the NHLPA approved a rule change for this season that implements hybrid icing for use this season. Hybrid icing was used during the preseason, and for all intents and purposes, is a race to the face off dot. If the defenseman wins the race, the play is blown dead. If the forward wins the race, the play will continue. This rule change is to hopefully...

NHL to use hybrid icing

The 2013-14 season is going to have a different look.  With lots of talk over the past few seasons about hybrid icing, the NHL and NHLPA has come to an agreement to implement the no touch icing in the upcoming season. Since the league has cracked down on hits to the head over the years, there has been a fine line when it comes to safety on chasing down a puck for icing.  With the...

Hybrid icing will be in effect for the start of the NHL regular season after it was approved by the players. The NHLPA gave the go-ahead for the rule change that makes icing a race to an imaginary line across the faceoff dots instead of the puck, which was given a trial run during the preseason. Will NHL adopt hybrid icing after test run in preseason?

One of the many things the NHL is trying out this preseason is hybrid icing. It was agreed that they would give it a test in the exhibition games and then decide if it would go into effect for regular season. Right now it's still anyone's guess as to if the players will sign of on it or not. Remember it has to get approval not only from the teams/GMs but the players as well...
