Andy Phillips Rides Again!

Yesterday, the Yankees promoted infielder and cult hero Andy Phillips from AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Phillips had been playing well down there, batting .301 with 11 homers and 36 RBIs. Over the last two years, Phillips has battled some trying personal issues, including his wife's fight with cancer and his mother's recovery from a critical car accident. He missed a large...

Jeff Bailey: The New Josh Phelps?

Remember Josh Phelps? In 2002, he came up as a catcher-turned-first-baseman with the Blue Jays and absolutely smashed the ball (.396 wOBA) for 287 plate appearances. His 2003 was decent, if not mind-blowing. Phelps struggled badly in 2004 and got traded to Cleveland mid-season. He bounced around the majors and minors for a while, and [...]

Chris Shelton Gets Booed in AAA

Although Chris Shelton had a successful first game in AAA (2-for-4 with an RBI triple), he got booed when he made a mental mistake on the basepaths. "Running to second on a ground ball hit by Josh Phelps, Shelton eluded the tag by Louisville second baseman William Bergolla, then the fielder threw to first for the force out. However, Shelton stopped running for a second, then...

Yanks Could Shea Hey to Hillenbrand

Theoretically, Hillenbrand would be an upgrade over the Miguel Cairo/ Josh Phelps experiment, however the 31-year-old veteran has seen his playing time decrease in Anaheim this season with the emergence of the Angels' Casey Kotchman. Shea is batting .246 with three homers and 18 RBIs in a paltry 175 at-bats.

Yankees DL Another One?

Yankees leadoff hitter Johnny Damon was not in the starting lineup last night and may not be at all in the immediate future. This recent development is bad news for the Yankees as they are already scrambling to fill-out their lineup. Yesterday the team designated Josh Phelps for assignment and will now be using Andy Phillips, who is a career .227 hitter, everyday at first. ...

Odds 'n Ends (or, Michaels 'n Cabrera)

Jason Michaels signed with the Astros this afternoon. This isn't really a big deal because if you get past Michaels' improbable 44 RBI, he was actually quite awful with the Pirates last year. He hit .228/.300/.382 with the Bucs in 254 plate appearances and his right-handed swing doesn't really ...

San Francisco Giants Off Season Report

Season Wrap Up 2008 saw the Bond-less Giants tied for the 6th worst record in baseball at 72-90, but I actually thought they had a chance of reaching 100 losses so they did better than I thought they would. They went into the year without a solid closer, which effects the rest of the bullpen, and supposed Ace of the staff, Barry Zito had another pathetic year and was even sent...

NY Times (Kepner): Looking to Add Arms, Yankees First Deal One

“Pitching, pitching, pitching, and then left field,” General Manager Brian Cashman said. “Those are the obvious areas we need to focus on.” The Yankees have an advantage on other teams, of course, because they have the highest payroll. They hope to bring it below $200 million for next season, but that still gives them enough space to have choices. Their first move was...
