Cubs Minor League Recap: 4-20-14

While everyone was busy getting high on yesterday’s National holiday, two of the Cubs minor league system were robbed of this long American tradition. Iowa Cubs They had 6 hits, no runs and made 3 errors. Maybe only one team was robbed of observing the holiday. Javier Baez was back in action after 10 days and struck out 3 times. He was 0-4. Matt Szczur was 2-4 and Arismendy Alcantara...

Cubs Minor League Recap: 4-16-14

Guy insulted me once, I pissed in his gas tank, car never drove straight again. Iowa Cubs Alright, Matt Szczur was 0-4. I’m tired of writing of that so unless otherwise noted, Matt Szczur was 0-4. Arismendy Alcantara said he was tired of not hitting and hit. He was 3-5 with a double and triple. He scored twice, drove in 2 and struck out once. Chris Coghlan was 2-4 with a double...

Cubs Minor League Recap: 4-15-14

I’ve not done these for several days and the reason is not important. Iowa Cubs Matt Szczur, Arismendy Alcantara and Josh Vitters were a combined 0-12 at the top of the I-Cubs batting order. Chris Coghlan was 1-3 with a walk and Chris Valaika was 2-3 with a double. Logan Watkins and Eli Whiteside each added hits. Carlos Pimentel got the start and that’s about all that’s worthy...

Minor League Recap: 4/3 -4/11

All of the Cubs’ full season minor league clubs have started their seasons in the last week, and only the Kane County Cougars have gotten out of the gate with a winning mark.  While it is still so incredibly early and there is not a lot of substance to discuss, there have been some ups and downs worth noting. Injuries of note: Jorge Soler (hamstring; 7 Day DL), Josh Vitters (knee...

Minor League Recap 4-5-14

Iowa Cubs It was a long night for the Iowa Cubs as they were beaten 11-1. Matt Szczur was 1-3 with a walk, run scored and a strikeout. Arismendy Alcantara was also 1-3 with a double. He also had an error. Javier Baez was 0-2 with 2 strikeouts and was thrown out of the game arguing the check swing strikeout. Ridiculously small sample, but he’s 0-9 with 6 strikeouts. Minor League Recap for April 4, 2014

I know Myles includes the Cubs, in part because they’re essentially a minor league team and in part because someone requested it. I’m not going to include them. It’s not because I have so much to say about the minor leagues. It’s because I just don’t want to write about them. Emilio Bonifacio? Seriously? No thanks. Iowa Cubs Matt Szczur was the leadoff hitter and he was...

Wada Ya Gonna Do?

Tsuyoshi Wada fired five innings of shutout ball with seven strikeouts, Javier Baez collected three hits and three RBI, and Josh Vitters ripped a solo HR and an RBI double, as the Iowa Cubs defeated the Salt Lake Bees (Angels AAA affiliate) 7-1 on Field #6, and C. J. Edwards and four relievers combined to toss a two-hitter and Rubi Silva stroked an RBI single and an RBI double...

Road to Opening Day: #12

The Cubs made extra cuts on Tuesday, but that didn’t stop the guys who got cut from doing some damage. The Cubs optioned outfielders Brett Jackson and Josh Vitters, pitchers Arodys Vizcaino and Zac Rosscup, and infielder Christian Villanueva, to Triple-A Iowa, and assigned catcher Rafael Lopez, outfielder Mitch Maier and pitcher Armando Rivero to Minor League camp on Tuesday. Mike...

Cubs Prospects—Arodys Vizcaino, Josh Vitters

Northsiders Report continues it series on Cubs prospects with Arodys Vizcaino and Josh Vitters. Vizcaino has yet to throw pitch for the Cubs organization since being acquired via trade as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. Once considered the Cubs’ top prospect, Vitters hasn’t lived up to expectations and made four trips to the DL in 2013, limiting playing time.

OV “Daily” Facepalm 03-05-2014

Castellanos on waivers Alex Castellanos was just put on waivers for the second time this year. I wrote about it the first time, concluding: I'm not saying that Castellanos could ever start for the Cubs (though I'm not sure he's not better than Sweeney), but he makes so much sense as the RH side of the CF/RF platoon, someone who could even play 2B in a pinch. I'd...

Kris Bryant: Good at Baseball

There was very little about today's Cubs game versus the Angels that was worth talking about, but there was a seedling of hope burrowed in the manure of this game. After the "starters" were mostly pulled in the 5th inning or so, we got to see Albert Almora, Jorge Soler, Arismendy Alcantara, Javier Baez, and Kris Bryant all on the field at the same time (also: Brett...

Kris Bryant: Fantasy Baseball Dynasty League Keeper

20, I repeat 20 players have manned the hot corner for the Chicago Cubs since 2000.  This is a sore subject for all Cubs fans (Like me!)  who have seen the highly touted prospects such as Gary Scott, Kevin Orie and Josh Vitters fizzle in a Cubs uniform.   Aramis Ramirez provided production for most of [...]

Is Young Outfielder Ready For The Cubs?

When you think of the young Cubs prospects, you think of Josh Vitters, Javier Baez and Jorge Soler. You might not think of Albert Almora. Almora was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the First Round (6th) in the 2012 MLB June Amateur Draft from the Mater Academy Charter School in Hialeah, Florida. Albert began his career in low A ball with the Boise Hawks. Almora has the ability...

Let's get into it, shall we?   Myles: Who do you guys think could breakout next year? I think there's a slam-dunk answer to breakout candidates, but I have a few I'd like to talk about. The one I'm most confident about is Shawon Dunston, Jr. He's been great...

2013 Cubs Prospects In Review: Josh Vitters

Josh Vitters came to the Cubs as the reward for their dismal 2006 campaign, a highly touted high school third base prospect with an enviable right-handed swing, tremendous raw power, and almost no glove whatsoever. After a year of demolishing both the Northwest and Midwest Leagues (slashing .328/.365/.498 in 61 games at Boise in 2008 and .316/.351/.535 in the first 70 games of...

JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 8-12-13

Sacramento River Cats 1 @ Iowa Cubs 2 So, there's a pretty cool story here. Josh Vitters came back, and played 3B (Olt played DH). He hit a home run in the bottom of the 4th; then, in the 5th, Olt called, and hit a home run of his own. Vitters ended up going 1-2 with that HR, a walk, and a strikeout; Olt had just the HR and the K.  Justin Grimm had the start and did…OK. 5...

He went 1-2 with and RBI and the severity of his injury is not yet known. Jake Arrieta helped his own cause by doubling in two runs. Ty Wright had a pinch-hit double. Jake Arrieta was pretty great...

New Orleans Zephyrs 2 @ Iowa Cubs 1 (10 innings) Boring. Mike Olt was 1-5 with 3 strikeouts, and, well, that'll happen. Josh Vitters, in left, went 1-3 with a walk and a strikeout. A Donnie Murphy forceout tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, but Yoanner Negrin's 1 run 10th gave the game back to New Orleans. Brad Nelson had three hits. On the pluls side, Brooks...
